The genus of a field over is invariant under isomorphisms of -algebras
ProvedCurveSymmetry.genus_congrFor a field containing , let be its module of Kähler differentials, with universal derivation . A place of is a valuation ring of (a subring with or for every nonzero ) that contains . A differential is regular at if it is a -linear combination of differentials with . The holomorphic differentials are those regular at every place of , and the genus of is .
Let and be fields containing , and suppose there is an isomorphism of -algebras . Then
So the genus depends only on the field, not on a plane model. It transfers the genus computed on the double cover of the family to the function field of the curve (Lemma 4), and in Remark 5 it is applied to the isomorphism of function fields that a similarity between and a curve of the family would induce, the two genera being three and two.
Formalization Note: is Module.finrank, which is for an infinite-dimensional space; the isomorphism is a term of K ≃ₐ[ℂ] L.
