Let AAA and BBB be self-adjoint operators on a complex Hilbert space H\mathfrak HH with A≥BA \ge BA≥B, i.e. A−B≥0A - B \ge 0A−B≥0, where D(A)⊆D(B)\mathfrak D(A) \subseteq \mathfrak D(B)D(A)⊆D(B) and

⟨ψ,(A−B)ψ⟩≥0for all ψ∈D(A−B)=D(A).\langle \psi, (A - B)\psi \rangle \ge 0 \qquad \text{for all } \psi \in \mathfrak D(A - B) = \mathfrak D(A).⟨ψ,(A−B)ψ⟩≥0for all ψ∈D(A−B)=D(A).

Then for every n≥1n \ge 1n≥1,

En(A)≥En(B),E_n(A) \ge E_n(B),En(A)≥En(B),

where En(⋅)E_n(\cdot)En(⋅) are the eigenvalues below the essential spectrum counted with multiplicity, respectively the infimum of the essential spectrum, as in the min-max principle.

Increasing an operator can only raise each of these eigenvalues.

Formalization Note. The book writes only "A−B≥0A - B \ge 0A−B≥0". Read literally on D(A)∩D(B)\mathfrak D(A) \cap \mathfrak D(B)D(A)∩D(B) the statement would be false (that intersection can be {0}\{0\}{0}), so the operator A−BA - BA−B is taken with domain D(A)\mathfrak D(A)D(A), i.e. the hypothesis D(A)⊆D(B)\mathfrak D(A) \subseteq \mathfrak D(B)D(A)⊆D(B) is stated, which is the reading under which the corollary follows from (4.32). EnE_nEn is eigenvalueSeq (values in EReal).

/-- Teschl, Corollary 4.11, p. 119: if `A` and `B` are self-adjoint with `A ≥ B`, i.e.
`A − B ≥ 0`, then `E_n(A) ≥ E_n(B)` for every `n ≥ 1`. Here `A − B ≥ 0` is read with

What the Lean code literally says, in plain math · claude-opus-5-5

This theorem is stated for a complex Hilbert space H\mathcal HH. It has the following hypotheses:

  • AAA and BBB are self-adjoint (Mathlib's sense) linear operators with domains D(A)\mathcal D(A)D(A) and D(B)\mathcal D(B)D(B).
  • D(A)⊆D(B)\mathcal D(A)\subseteq\mathcal D(B)D(A)⊆D(B).
  • For every ψ\psiψ lying in both D(A)\mathcal D(A)D(A) and D(B)\mathcal D(B)D(B) (which, given the inclusion, means every ψ∈D(A)\psi\in\mathcal D(A)ψ∈D(A)):
Re⁡⟨ψ,Aψ−Bψ⟩≥0.\operatorname{Re}\langle\psi, A\psi - B\psi\rangle\ge 0 .Re⟨ψ,Aψ−Bψ⟩≥0.
  • n∈Nn\in\mathbb Nn∈N with n≥1n\ge1n≥1.

The conclusion is the extended-real inequality

En(B)≤En(A),E_n(B)\le E_n(A),En(B)≤En(A),

where En(⋅)∈[−∞,+∞]E_n(\cdot)\in[-\infty,+\infty]En(⋅)∈[−∞,+∞] is the imported eigenvalueSeq. Its body is not part of this declaration's text and is not unfolded here.

Degenerate cases.

  • n=0n=0n=0. Excluded by the hypothesis n≥1n\ge1n≥1.
  • Infinite values. Either side may be ±∞\pm\infty±∞; the inequality is then read in the extended reals.
  • H={0}\mathcal H=\{0\}H={0}. The form hypothesis holds trivially, and the claim reduces to En(B)≤En(A)E_n(B)\le E_n(A)En(B)≤En(A) for two operators on the zero space.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
