The genus of a function field over C\mathbb CC, and holomorphic differentials on the double cover w2=hm,α(t)w^2=h_{m,\alpha}(t)w2=hm,α(t)

Let KKK be a field containing C\mathbb CC, with Kähler differentials ΩK/C\Omega_{K/\mathbb C}ΩK/C and derivation d:K→ΩK/Cd:K\to\Omega_{K/\mathbb C}d:K→ΩK/C. A place of KKK is a valuation subring O≠KO\ne KO=K containing C\mathbb CC. Let h∈C[t]h\in\mathbb C[t]h∈C[t] be squarefree with W2−hW^2-hW2−h irreducible over C(t)\mathbb C(t)C(t), let Lh=C(t)[W]/(W2−h)L_h=\mathbb C(t)[W]/(W^2-h)Lh=C(t)[W]/(W2−h), with ttt and www the images of the variables, and for (c,d)∈C2(c,d)\in\mathbb C^2(c,d)∈C2 with d2=h(c)d^2=h(c)d2=h(c) let Oc,d⊆Lh\mathcal O_{c,d}\subseteq L_hOc,d⊆Lh be the local ring of the curve w2=h(t)w^2=h(t)w2=h(t) at (c,d)(c,d)(c,d). For the extremal family let m≥1m\ge1m≥1 and α∈C\alpha\in\mathbb Cα∈C with α≠αˉ\alpha\ne\bar\alphaα=αˉ, hm,α(t)=−t(tm+1)(αtm+αˉ)h_{m,\alpha}(t)=-t(t^m+1)(\alpha t^m+\bar\alpha)hm,α(t)=−t(tm+1)(αtm+αˉ), and L=Lhm,αL=L_{h_{m,\alpha}}L=Lhm,α.

The genus is defined from the field alone. The differentials regular at a place OOO are the complex span of the a dba\,dbadb with a,b∈Oa,b\in Oa,b∈O, the holomorphic differentials are those regular at every place, and

g(K)=dim⁡C ⋂O a place of Kspan⁡C{a db:a,b∈O}.g(K)=\dim_{\mathbb C}\ \bigcap_{O\ \text{a place of}\ K}\operatorname{span}_{\mathbb C}\{a\,db : a,b\in O\}.g(K)=dimC O a place of K⋂spanC{adb:a,b∈O}.

An isomorphism of C\mathbb CC-algebras K→K′K\to K'K→K′ induces C\mathbb CC-linear isomorphisms ΩK/C→ΩK′/C\Omega_{K/\mathbb C}\to\Omega_{K'/\mathbb C}ΩK/C→ΩK′/C and between the spaces of holomorphic differentials, both defined in the file.

For the double cover, the file defines concrete regularity conditions and candidate differentials:

  1. A differential ω\omegaω of LhL_hLh is regular at the point (c,d)(c,d)(c,d) if, for every uniformizer uuu of Oc,d\mathcal O_{c,d}Oc,d and every f∈Lhf\in L_hf∈Lh with ω=f du\omega=f\,duω=fdu, one has f∈Oc,df\in\mathcal O_{c,d}f∈Oc,d.
  2. A differential ω\omegaω of LLL is regular at infinity if its transport along the chart isomorphism L→Lhm,αˉL\to L_{h_{m,\bar\alpha}}L→Lhm,αˉ, t↦1/st\mapsto1/st↦1/s, w↦w′s−(m+1)w\mapsto w's^{-(m+1)}w↦w′s−(m+1), is regular at the point (0,0)(0,0)(0,0) of the conjugate curve w′2=hm,αˉ(s)w'^2=h_{m,\bar\alpha}(s)w′2=hm,αˉ(s).
  3. ω\omegaω is holomorphic if it is regular at every point (c,d)(c,d)(c,d) with d2=hm,α(c)d^2=h_{m,\alpha}(c)d2=hm,α(c) and at infinity; these ω\omegaω form a complex subspace of ΩL/C\Omega_{L/\mathbb C}ΩL/C.
  4. The differentials ti dt/wt^i\,dt/wtidt/w of LLL for i∈Ni\in\mathbb Ni∈N, with coefficients ti/wt^i/wti/w, and the element t−ct-ct−c of C[t][W]/(W2−h)\mathbb C[t][W]/(W^2-h)C[t][W]/(W2−h).

The genus is the invariant in Lemma 4, where the normalization of VαV_\alphaVα has genus mmm, and in Remark 5, where Re⁡(z4)=1\operatorname{Re}(z^4)=1Re(z4)=1 has genus three against two for m=2m=2m=2. Since it depends only on the function field up to C\mathbb CC-isomorphism, a similarity between real loci, which induces such an isomorphism, preserves it. The regularity conditions on the double cover and the differentials ti dt/wt^i\,dt/wtidt/w, 0≤i<m0\le i<m0≤i<m, are the explicit description through which the genus mmm of the family is computed.

Formalization Note: The dimension is Module.finrank, which is 000 for an infinite-dimensional space, and places are ValuationSubrings. For the family, m≥1m\ge1m≥1 and α≠αˉ\alpha\ne\bar\alphaα=αˉ are Fact instances; regularity at infinity is defined by transport rather than through a separate local ring, and a separate theorem shows that the point places and the place over t=∞t=\inftyt=∞ are all the places of LLL. The file also proves that a single uniformizer decides regularity at a point and that regularity is preserved by sums and complex multiples.

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
