Claim 13 of Bubeck--Coester--Rabani, in the form the regrouping of Lemma 15 consumes.

Let Mw=bcrLevel2 β w\mathcal M_w=\mathtt{bcrLevel2}\ \beta\ wMw=bcrLevel2 β w be the level-www space of the recursive BCR family, with marked points sw,tws_w,t_wsw,tw at distance dw=β3wd_w=\beta 3^wdw=β3w, and let ChunksTight(α,β,w)\mathrm{ChunksTight}(\alpha,\beta,w)ChunksTight(α,β,w) be the level invariant KServer.BCRInductiveChunksTight: a chunk system with online escapes on Mw\mathcal M_wMw with sizes in [3w/2, 3⋅3w/2][3^w/2,\,3\cdot 3^w/2][3w/2,3⋅3w/2], expected total at least αβw23w\alpha\beta w^2 3^wαβw23w, escape price dwd_wdw, exactly M≥⌈αβw2⌉M\ge\lceil\alpha\beta w^2\rceilM≥⌈αβw2⌉ chunks, constant initial information and no empty chunk.

Statement. Fix constants 0<α≤10<\alpha\le 10<α≤1 and an integer β≥2\beta\ge 2β≥2 subject to the smallness relation αβ≤10−6\alpha\beta\le 10^{-6}αβ≤10−6, and let www be a level with α(w+1)2>1\alpha(w+1)^2>1α(w+1)2>1. If ChunksTight(α,β,w)\mathrm{ChunksTight}(\alpha,\beta,w)ChunksTight(α,β,w) holds, then on the next level's space Mw+1\mathcal M_{w+1}Mw+1 there are reals cB,j≥0c_B,j\ge 0cB,j≥0 with

cB+j ≤ 118 3w,c_B+j\ \le\ \tfrac{11}{8}\,3^{w},cB+j ≤ 8113w,

and a chunk system with online escapes between sw+1s_{w+1}sw+1 and tw+1t_{w+1}tw+1 whose

  • size floor is 000 and whose size ceiling is cBc_BcB;
  • escape price is dw=β3wd_w=\beta 3^wdw=β3w, unchanged from level www;
  • Doob martingale of the total mass has one-step jumps at most jjj;
  • expected total mass is exactly αβ(w+1)2 3w+1\alpha\beta(w+1)^2\,3^{w+1}αβ(w+1)23w+1;
  • initial information is constant, and no chunk is empty.

Content. This is the first half of one level of BCR's Lemma 12, namely Claim 13: the three-stage construction of subchunks on the six-copy next-level space --- stage 1, the stage-2a race with its anti-concentration gain, stage 2b and stage 3. Stages 1, 2b and 3 contribute three copies of the level-www mass, so the mass triples while the distance triples too; the race must contribute the further Θ(αβw)\Theta(\alpha\beta w)Θ(αβw) chunk masses that raise the competitive ratio from αβw2\alpha\beta w^2αβw2 to αβ(w+1)2\alpha\beta(w+1)^2αβ(w+1)2. That is what the smallness relation αβ≤10−6\alpha\beta\le 10^{-6}αβ≤10−6 is for: the anti-concentration gain of a race of κ≤M≈αβw2\kappa\le M\approx\alpha\beta w^2κ≤M≈αβw2 steps with chunk masses of order 3w3^w3w is of order κ 3w≈αβ w 3w\sqrt{\kappa}\,3^w\approx\sqrt{\alpha\beta}\,w\,3^wκ3w≈αβw3w, which dominates the required increment ≈6αβw 3w\approx 6\alpha\beta w\,3^w≈6αβw3w exactly when αβ\sqrt{\alpha\beta}αβ is small enough.

Two features of the conclusion are normalisations rather than content. Fixing the expected total exactly at the level-(w+1)(w+1)(w+1) target αβ(w+1)23w+1\alpha\beta(w+1)^2 3^{w+1}αβ(w+1)23w+1 is free once at least that much mass has been produced, because the sizes of a chunk system may always be scaled down: every hypothesis of KServer.ChunkSystemB is monotone in the sizes. And bounding the ceiling plus the Doob jump by 1183w\frac{11}{8}3^w8113w is precisely the budget that the regrouping needs: the level-(w+1)(w+1)(w+1) window [3w+1/2, 3⋅3w+1/2][3^{w+1}/2,\ 3\cdot 3^{w+1}/2][3w+1/2, 3⋅3w+1/2] is centred at 3w+13^{w+1}3w+1 with half-width 3w+1/2=32 3w3^{w+1}/2=\frac32\,3^{w}3w+1/2=233w, and a regrouping into ⌈αβ(w+1)2⌉\lceil\alpha\beta(w+1)^2\rceil⌈αβ(w+1)2⌉ chunks of mean mass 3w+13^{w+1}3w+1 spends cB+jc_B+jcB+j of that half-width on each side, plus a further 3w+1/⌈αβ(w+1)2⌉3^{w+1}/\lceil\alpha\beta(w+1)^2\rceil3w+1/⌈αβ(w+1)2⌉ for the integrality of the chunk count; cB+j≤1183wc_B+j\le\frac{11}{8}3^{w}cB+j≤8113w leaves both affordable as soon as αβ(w+1)2≥64\alpha\beta(w+1)^2\ge 64αβ(w+1)2≥64.

Why this formulation. Together with the zero-floor regrouping KServer.chunk_combining_zero_floor this statement gives one full level of the induction: regrouping the subchunk system into ⌈αβ(w+1)2⌉\lceil\alpha\beta(w+1)^2\rceil⌈αβ(w+1)2⌉ chunks of mean mass 3w+13^{w+1}3w+1 puts the sizes inside the level-(w+1)(w+1)(w+1) window, raises the escape price from β3w\beta 3^wβ3w to at most β3w+1\beta 3^{w+1}β3w+1, and preserves the total, the constant initial information and the nonemptiness of the chunks --- which is exactly ChunksTight(α,β,w+1)\mathrm{ChunksTight}(\alpha,\beta,w+1)ChunksTight(α,β,w+1).

What remains for a prover. The parameter schedule of the race inside Claim 13: the number of coin steps κ\kappaκ, the tie-break scale ε\varepsilonε, the floor used in the anti-concentration bound and the depth of the sturdiness invariant, subject to the gain of KServer.level_step_sturdy exceeding the losses it charges. Note that the level invariant supplies the sturdiness, Doob-jump and variance hypotheses of that step only through the crude window bounds of KServer.chunk_window_invariants and KServer.chunk_window_variance, whose defect m (cHi−cLo)m\,(c_{Hi}-c_{Lo})m(cHi−cLo) is of the same order as the whole mass; sharpening that, or carrying a regularity invariant through the construction, is the substance of the claim.
