§3, pp. 6–7 — the two sum bounds of the running time (corrected: 1/(|V| − 1); the printed 1/(|V|^⌈l/2⌉ − 1) fails for ⌈l/2⌉ ≥ 2)

Let m≥2m \ge 2m≥2 be an integer (it stands for ∣Vn,G∣|\mathcal V_{n,\mathcal G}|∣Vn,G∣) and h≥0h \ge 0h≥0 (it stands for ⌈l/2⌉\lceil l/2\rceil⌈l/2⌉). Then

∑i=1hmilog⁡2(mi)  ≤  ∑i=1hmilog⁡2(mh)\sum_{i=1}^{h} m^i \log_2(m^i) \;\le\; \sum_{i=1}^{h} m^i \log_2(m^h)i=1∑hmilog2(mi)≤i=1∑hmilog2(mh)

and

∑i=1hmi  ≤  mh(1+1m−1).\sum_{i=1}^{h} m^i \;\le\; m^h\Big(1 + \frac{1}{m-1}\Big).i=1∑hmi≤mh(1+m−11).

Together with ∣Si∣≤mi|S_i| \le m^i∣Si∣≤mi these bound the total work of MITM-factor by a constant times mhlog⁡(mh)m^h \log(m^h)mhlog(mh).

Formalization Note. The paper prints the second bound as mh(1+1mh−1)m^h\big(1 + \frac{1}{m^h - 1}\big)mh(1+mh−11), which is false for h≥2h \ge 2h≥2: for m=2m = 2m=2, h=2h = 2h=2 the left side is 666 and the printed right side is 16/316/316/3. The bound stated here, with 1m−1\frac{1}{m-1}m−11, is the geometric-series bound and is what the OOO-claim needs. Logarithms are Real.logb 2; the base does not affect the inequalities.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
