Let h∈C[t]h\in\mathbb C[t]h∈C[t] be a squarefree polynomial such that W2−h(t)W^2-h(t)W2−h(t) is irreducible over C(t)\mathbb C(t)C(t). Let Kh=C(t)[W]/(W2−h(t))K_h=\mathbb C(t)[W]/(W^2-h(t))Kh=C(t)[W]/(W2−h(t)), with www the class of WWW, so that w2=h(t)w^2=h(t)w2=h(t), and let ΩKh/C\Omega_{K_h/\mathbb C}ΩKh/C be its module of Kähler differentials, with universal derivation ddd. Fix a point (t0,w0)∈C2(t_0,w_0)\in\mathbb C^2(t0,w0)∈C2 with w02=h(t0)w_0^2=h(t_0)w02=h(t0), and let O(t0,w0)⊂Kh\mathcal O_{(t_0,w_0)}\subset K_hO(t0,w0)⊂Kh be the local ring at (t0,w0)(t_0,w_0)(t0,w0) of the affine curve w2=h(t)w^2=h(t)w2=h(t), that is, the localization of C[t][W]/(W2−h)\mathbb C[t][W]/(W^2-h)C[t][W]/(W2−h) at the maximal ideal of (t0,w0)(t_0,w_0)(t0,w0), viewed inside KhK_hKh; let m(t0,w0)\mathfrak m_{(t_0,w_0)}m(t0,w0) be its maximal ideal. This ring is a valuation ring of KhK_hKh, the place of KhK_hKh at (t0,w0)(t_0,w_0)(t0,w0). Write Reg⁡(O(t0,w0))\operatorname{Reg}(\mathcal O_{(t_0,w_0)})Reg(O(t0,w0)) for the space of C\mathbb CC-linear combinations of differentials a dba\,dbadb with a,b∈O(t0,w0)a,b\in\mathcal O_{(t_0,w_0)}a,b∈O(t0,w0).

Then, for every ω∈ΩKh/C\omega\in\Omega_{K_h/\mathbb C}ω∈ΩKh/C,

ω∈Reg⁡(O(t0,w0))  ⟺  (f∈O(t0,w0) whenever u∈O(t0,w0), m(t0,w0)=(u), f∈Kh and ω=f du).\omega\in\operatorname{Reg}(\mathcal O_{(t_0,w_0)})\iff\Bigl(f\in\mathcal O_{(t_0,w_0)}\ \text{whenever } u\in\mathcal O_{(t_0,w_0)},\ \mathfrak m_{(t_0,w_0)}=(u),\ f\in K_h\ \text{and}\ \omega=f\,du\Bigr).ω∈Reg(O(t0,w0))⟺(f∈O(t0,w0) whenever u∈O(t0,w0), m(t0,w0)=(u), f∈Kh and ω=fdu).

The right-hand side is the explicit criterion: the coefficient of ω\omegaω against any uniformizer lies in the local ring.

For the double cover w2=−t(tm+1)(αtm+αˉ)w^2=-t(t^m+1)(\alpha t^m+\bar\alpha)w2=−t(tm+1)(αtm+αˉ) of the family, this is used to identify the intrinsically defined holomorphic differentials with the explicitly computed ones, and hence to obtain the genus of the function field of the curve Pα=Xm(α+XY)+Ym(αˉ+XY)=0P_\alpha=X^m(\alpha+XY)+Y^m(\bar\alpha+XY)=0Pα=Xm(α+XY)+Ym(αˉ+XY)=0: genus mmm in Lemma 4, genus two for m=2m=2m=2 in Remark 5.

Formalization Note: the place is a ValuationSubring with the same elements as the local ring, which is a subalgebra of KhK_hKh. The squarefreeness of hhh and the irreducibility of W2−hW^2-hW2−h are Fact instances.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
