Let (Ω,ΓD,ΓN)(\Omega, \Gamma_D, \Gamma_N)(Ω,ΓD,ΓN) be a mixed domain, μ1,μ2,τ,Λ∈R\mu_1, \mu_2, \tau, \Lambda \in \mathbb Rμ1,μ2,τ,Λ∈R. Let φ:Rn→C\varphi : \mathbb R^n \to \mathbb Cφ:Rn→C be C2C^2C2 on Ω\OmegaΩ and C1C^1C1 on Ω‾\overline\OmegaΩ, and an eigenfunction of the mixed Dirichlet–Neumann Laplacian with eigenvalue Λ2\Lambda^2Λ2:

i.e. of problem (1.12)–(1.14) with a≡1a \equiv 1a≡1.

This is the separation-of-variables step of §5.2: it reduces the construction of non-decaying solutions to finding a root λ\lambdaλ of the scalar transcendental equation (5.23) for an eigenvalue Λ2\Lambda^2Λ2 of (5.22).

Formalization Note The paper's (5.22) prints Δφ=−μ2φ\Delta\varphi = -\mu^2\varphiΔφ=−μ2φ; the following sentence ("for any Λ2\Lambda^2Λ2 eigenvalue of problem (5.22)") shows that −Λ2φ-\Lambda^2\varphi−Λ2φ is meant, which is what is stated. The positivity assumptions μ1,μ2,τ>0\mu_1, \mu_2, \tau > 0μ1,μ2,τ>0 of the paper are not needed for this step and are omitted, which makes the statement more general.

/-- Nicaise–Pignotti, §5.2, p. 1583, (5.21)–(5.23): if `φ` is an eigenfunction of the mixed
Dirichlet–Neumann Laplacian (5.22) with eigenvalue `Λ²` and `λ ∈ ℂ` solves the characteristic
equation (5.23), then `u(x, t) = e^{λt} φ(x)` solves (5.20) (problem (1.12)–(1.14) with `a ≡ 1`). -/

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
