Let TTT be the Syracuse map, sending nnn to the odd part of 3n+13n+13n+1. If mmm is a positive integer with Ta(m)=mT^a(m) = mTa(m)=m for some aaa with 1≤a≤2521 \le a \le 2521≤a≤252, then m=1m = 1m=1.

Equivalently, every Syracuse cycle of length at most 252252252 is the trivial cycle {1}\{1\}{1}. The return time aaa need not be minimal.

The proof is uniform across the 252252252 periods. For each aaa one checks the single numerical inequality

38476a < 2Ka⋅12825a,38476^a \ <\ 2^{K_a}\cdot 12825^a ,38476a < 2Ka⋅12825a,

where KaK_aKa is the least exponent with 3a<2Ka3^a < 2^{K_a}3a<2Ka, and feeds it to the margin criterion; the threshold 128251282512825 is available because no nontrivial cycle contains a value below 128251282512825. At a=252a = 252a=252 these compare integers of about 106010601060 digits.

The least threshold covering every period up to aaa grows without bound: it is 34,147,387,1193,3343,6725,12825,27114,9978134, 147, 387, 1193, 3343, 6725, 12825, 27114, 9978134,147,387,1193,3343,6725,12825,27114,99781 as aaa passes 16,28,40,93,146,199,252,30516, 28, 40, 93, 146, 199, 252, 30516,28,40,93,146,199,252,305, with the jumps landing on denominators of convergents of log⁡23\log_2 3log23, where 2Ka/3a2^{K_a}/3^a2Ka/3a returns close to 111. No single threshold serves every period, so this argument cannot settle the cycle question outright — but no finite period defeats it either. Only the certificate size, and hence the formalisation cost, grows without limit.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
