This describes the endpoint neighbourhoods at the frontier with k+2k + 2k+2 colours: each one is a symmetric set of uuu points whose differences avoid two colours.

Let k,u,t,m∈Nk, u, t, m \in \mathbb{N}k,u,t,m∈N with 2t=(k+1)u2t = (k+1)u2t=(k+1)u and m=(k+2)tm = (k+2)tm=(k+2)t, and suppose that TR(k,u+1)\mathrm{TR}(k, u + 1)TR(k,u+1) holds, that is, every colouring with at most kkk colours of the pairs of a finite set of at least u+1u + 1u+1 naturals has a monochromatic triangle (Rk(3)≤u+1R_k(3) \le u + 1Rk(3)≤u+1). Let c:N→Fin(k+2)c : \mathbb{N} \to \mathrm{Fin}(k+2)c:N→Fin(k+2) be a Schur colouring of [1,2m+1][1, 2m + 1][1,2m+1] with k+2k + 2k+2 colours, write q=c(m+1)q = c(m+1)q=c(m+1), let Vm={ x∈[0,2m+1]:x≠m, c(∣m−x∣)=q }V_m = \{\, x \in [0, 2m+1] : x \ne m,\ c(|m - x|) = q \,\}Vm={x∈[0,2m+1]:x=m, c(∣m−x∣)=q} be the central neighbourhood, and for a colour iii let

Pi={ x∈Vm:x≠2m+1, c(2m+1−x)=i }P_i = \{\, x \in V_m : x \ne 2m + 1,\ c(2m + 1 - x) = i \,\}Pi={x∈Vm:x=2m+1, c(2m+1−x)=i}

be the endpoint neighbourhood of colour iii. If i≠qi \ne qi=q, then:

  1. ∣Pi∣=u|P_i| = u∣Pi∣=u;
  2. for every x∈Pix \in P_ix∈Pi: 2m−x∈Pi2m - x \in P_i2m−x∈Pi and 2m−x≠x2m - x \ne x2m−x=x;
  3. for all x,y∈Pix, y \in P_ix,y∈Pi with x≠yx \ne yx=y: c(∣x−y∣)≠ic(|x - y|) \ne ic(∣x−y∣)=i and c(∣x−y∣)≠qc(|x - y|) \ne qc(∣x−y∣)=q.

In short,

∣Pi∣=u,2m−Pi=Pi  with no fixed point,c(∣x−y∣)∉{i,q}  (x≠y∈Pi).|P_i| = u, \qquad 2m - P_i = P_i \ \text{ with no fixed point}, \qquad c(|x - y|) \notin \{i, q\} \ \ (x \ne y \in P_i).∣Pi∣=u,2m−Pi=Pi  with no fixed point,c(∣x−y∣)∈/{i,q}  (x=y∈Pi).

So PiP_iPi is the union of u/2u/2u/2 pairs {m−d,m+d}\{m - d, m + d\}{m−d,m+d}, the reflection x↦2m−xx \mapsto 2m - xx↦2m−x preserves all differences inside PiP_iPi, and the difference colouring on PiP_iPi uses at most kkk of the k+2k + 2k+2 colours. For six colours under R4(3)≤61R_4(3) \le 61R4(3)≤61 (k=4k = 4k=4, u=60u = 60u=60, m=900m = 900m=900), each of the five sets PiP_iPi, i≠c(901)i \ne c(901)i=c(901), consists of 303030 pairs {900−d,900+d}\{900 - d, 900 + d\}{900−d,900+d}, and its differences use only the four colours other than iii and c(901)c(901)c(901).

Formalization Note. The colouring is a function on all of N\mathbb{N}N, and SchurColoring (2 * m + 1) c constrains only its values on [1,2m+1][1, 2m+1][1,2m+1]; the case x=yx = yx=y is included, so c(2x)≠c(x)c(2x) \ne c(x)c(2x)=c(x) for 1≤x≤m1 \le x \le m1≤x≤m. In TriangleRamsey k (u + 1) the colours are natural numbers from any Finset of at most kkk elements, and the pair colouring is a function N→N→N\mathbb{N} \to \mathbb{N} \to \mathbb{N}N→N→N that is constrained only on the pairs x<yx < yx<y of the vertex set; for k≥1k \ge 1k≥1 the statement is Rk(3)≤u+1R_k(3) \le u + 1Rk(3)≤u+1. For k=0k = 0k=0 the hypotheses force u≥2u \ge 2u≥2 and m≥2m \ge 2m≥2, and [1,2m+1]⊇[1,5][1, 2m+1] \supseteq [1, 5][1,2m+1]⊇[1,5] has no Schur colouring with two colours, so the statement is vacuous there; the case k=1k = 1k=1 is not vacuous. PiP_iPi is the Finset endpointNbhd c m i =Γi(Vm,2m+1)= \Gamma_i(V_m, 2m + 1)=Γi(Vm,2m+1). The subtraction 2m−x2m - x2m−x is truncated, but every x∈Pix \in P_ix∈Pi satisfies x≤2mx \le 2mx≤2m (it lies in [0,2m+1][0, 2m+1][0,2m+1] and differs from 2m+12m + 12m+1), so 2m−x2m - x2m−x is the ordinary difference. Distances are Nat.dist. The point 000 can lie in PiP_iPi, and then 2m2m2m does too. The statement is vacuous for u=0u = 0u=0, since TR(k,1)\mathrm{TR}(k, 1)TR(k,1) is false. Example (k=1k = 1k=1, u=2u = 2u=2, m=6m = 6m=6): for the Schur colouring of [1,13][1, 13][1,13] with classes {1,4,7,10,13}\{1, 4, 7, 10, 13\}{1,4,7,10,13}, {2,3,11,12}\{2, 3, 11, 12\}{2,3,11,12}, {5,6,8,9}\{5, 6, 8, 9\}{5,6,8,9}, the two endpoint neighbourhoods are {2,10}\{2, 10\}{2,10} and {5,7}\{5, 7\}{5,7}; both are closed under x↦12−xx \mapsto 12 - xx↦12−x, and their differences 888 and 222 have the colours of {5,6,8,9}\{5, 6, 8, 9\}{5,6,8,9} and {2,3,11,12}\{2, 3, 11, 12\}{2,3,11,12}.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
