Let Ω\OmegaΩ be a nonempty closed convex subset of a finite-dimensional real inner product space EEE, and let PPP be the projection into Ω\OmegaΩ.

  1. If z∈Ωz \in \Omegaz∈Ω, then ⟨P(x)−x,z−P(x)⟩≥0\langle P(x) - x, z - P(x) \rangle \ge 0⟨P(x)−x,z−P(x)⟩≥0 for all x∈Ex \in Ex∈E.
  2. PPP is monotone: ⟨P(y)−P(x),y−x⟩≥0\langle P(y) - P(x), y - x \rangle \ge 0⟨P(y)−P(x),y−x⟩≥0 for all x,y∈Ex, y \in Ex,y∈E, and the inequality is strict whenever P(y)≠P(x)P(y) \ne P(x)P(y)=P(x).
  3. PPP is nonexpansive:
∥P(y)−P(x)∥≤∥y−x∥for all x,y∈E.\|P(y) - P(x)\| \le \|y - x\| \quad \text{for all } x, y \in E.∥P(y)−P(x)∥≤∥y−x∥for all x,y∈E.

These three properties of the projection underlie every estimate in the convergence analysis of the gradient projection method.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
