Let K⊆QK \subseteq QK⊆Q be a closed convex cone in Rn+1\mathbb R^{n+1}Rn+1. "Consider the unit cube Q′Q'Q′ in the hyperplane x0=0x_0 = 0x0=0 [read: x0=1x_0 = 1x0=1] and let 1≤t≤n1 \le t \le n1≤t≤n. Consider any face FFF of Q′Q'Q′ of dimension n−tn - tn−t and let Fˉ\bar FFˉ be the union of faces of Q′Q'Q′ parallel to FFF." Such a face fixes a set TTT of ttt coordinates, so

Fˉ={x:x0=1, 0≤xi≤1 (1≤i≤n), xi∈{0,1} (i∈T)}.\bar F = \{x : x_0 = 1,\ 0 \le x_i \le 1 \ (1 \le i \le n),\ x_i \in \{0, 1\} \ (i \in T)\}.Fˉ={x:x0=1, 0≤xi≤1 (1≤i≤n), xi∈{0,1} (i∈T)}.

Then, for every nonempty set TTT of t=∣T∣t = |T|t=∣T∣ coordinates,

Nt(K)⊆cone⁡(K∩Fˉ).N^t(K) \subseteq \operatorname{cone}(K \cap \bar F).Nt(K)⊆cone(K∩Fˉ).

This is the induction claim (4) of the proof of Theorem 1.4: for t=1t = 1t=1 it is equivalent to Lemma 1.3, and for t=nt = nt=n it is the nontrivial inclusion Nn(K)⊆K∘N^n(K) \subseteq K^\circNn(K)⊆K∘ of the theorem.

Formalization Note The page reads "in the hyperplane x0=0x_0 = 0x0=0", a misprint for x0=1x_0 = 1x0=1 (the cube's vertices are the 0–1 vectors with x0=1x_0 = 1x0=1). Fˉ\bar FFˉ is indexed by the set TTT of fixed coordinates, which is all it depends on; cone⁡\operatorname{cone}cone is the span over nonnegative reals. KKK is assumed closed, which the paper tacitly assumes (polyhedral in all its applications) and which the proof's use of Lemma 1.3 needs.

What the Lean code literally says, in plain math · claude-opus-5-5

Let ι\iotaι be a finite type with decidable equality, and let Vι=R{0}⊔ιV_\iota = \mathbb{R}^{\{0\}\sqcup\iota}Vι=R{0}⊔ι. Let QQQ be the set of finite nonnegative combinations of vectors with all coordinates in {0,1}\{0,1\}{0,1} and 000-th coordinate 111.

Let K⊆VιK \subseteq V_\iotaK⊆Vι satisfy:

  • nonempty and closed under addition and nonnegative scaling;
  • topologically closed;
  • contained in QQQ.

Let T⊆ιT \subseteq \iotaT⊆ι be a nonempty finite set with t=∣T∣t = |T|t=∣T∣ elements. The statement asserts

Nt(K) ⊆ cone⁡(K∩FˉT),N^t(K) \ \subseteq\ \operatorname{cone}\big(K \cap \bar F_T\big),Nt(K) ⊆ cone(K∩FˉT),

where the terms mean the following.

  • The set FˉT\bar F_TFˉT:
FˉT={x:x0=1, 0≤xi≤1 ∀i∈ι, xi∈{0,1} ∀i∈T}.\bar F_T = \{x : x_0 = 1,\ 0 \le x_i \le 1 \ \forall i \in \iota,\ x_i \in \{0,1\}\ \forall i \in T\}.FˉT={x:x0=1, 0≤xi≤1 ∀i∈ι, xi∈{0,1} ∀i∈T}.
  • cone⁡(S)\operatorname{cone}(S)cone(S) is the set of all finite nonnegative combinations of elements of SSS, including 000. No closure is taken.
  • The iterates are
N0(K)=K,Ns+1(K)=N(Ns(K),Q).N^0(K) = K, \qquad N^{s+1}(K) = N\big(N^s(K), Q\big).N0(K)=K,Ns+1(K)=N(Ns(K),Q).
  • For arbitrary sets A,BA, BA,B, N(A,B)N(A,B)N(A,B) is the set of 000-th columns Ye0Y e_0Ye0 of matrices YYY that are symmetric, satisfy Yii=Y0iY_{ii} = Y_{0i}Yii=Y0i for all i∈ιi \in \iotai∈ι, and satisfy u⊤Yv≥0u^\top Y v \ge 0u⊤Yv≥0 for all u∈A∗u \in A^*u∈A∗, v∈B∗v \in B^*v∈B∗. Here A∗={u:u⊤x≥0 ∀x∈A}A^* = \{u : u^\top x \ge 0\ \forall x \in A\}A∗={u:u⊤x≥0 ∀x∈A}.
  • The intermediate iterates Ns(K)N^s(K)Ns(K) are plugged in as arbitrary sets; no hypothesis is imposed on them.

Degenerate cases:

  • ttt and ι\iotaι. Since T≠∅T \ne \emptysetT=∅, t≥1t \ge 1t≥1 and ι\iotaι is nonempty, so the case N0(K)=KN^0(K) = KN0(K)=K is never used.
  • Empty intersection. If K∩FˉT=∅K \cap \bar F_T = \emptysetK∩FˉT=∅, the right-hand side is {0}\{0\}{0}.
  • T=ιT = \iotaT=ι. Then FˉT\bar F_TFˉT consists of the 0–1 vectors with x0=1x_0 = 1x0=1.
  • Hypotheses are satisfiable. K={0}K = \{0\}K={0} meets them.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
