The theorem gives a Lyapunov-function proof of the optimal accelerated rates of Nesterov's method, simultaneously for the convex case (μ=0\mu=0μ=0, rate O(1/k2)O(1/k^2)O(1/k2)) and the strongly convex case (μ>0\mu>0μ>0, linear rate 1−μ/L1-\sqrt{\mu/L}1−μ/L once γ1≥μ\gamma_1\ge\muγ1≥μ), interpreting the method as a corrected semi-implicit discretization of the NAG flow.

Formalization Note. ⟨⋅,⋅⟩\langle\cdot,\cdot\rangle⟨⋅,⋅⟩ and ∥⋅∥∗\|\cdot\|_*∥⋅∥∗ are the inner product and norm of VVV (Riesz); ∇f\nabla f∇f is an explicit gradient map. Algorithm 1 writes αk∈(0,1)\alpha_k\in(0,1)αk∈(0,1); the run records only αk>0\alpha_k>0αk>0 (the positive root of step 2), and αk≤1\alpha_k\le1αk≤1 is concluded. Step 5 is an inequality, so the theorem covers every sufficient-decrease choice of xk+1x_{k+1}xk+1. The theorem's hypothesis "Lαk2=γk+1L\alpha_k^2=\gamma_{k+1}Lαk2=γk+1" follows from steps 2–3 and is not restated. γ1\gamma_1γ1 is the value produced by the run. Cγ0,LC_{\gamma_0,L}Cγ0,L is written out inline.

/-- Theorem 6.1 (Luo & Chen, arXiv:1909.03145v4, p. 24). Let `f ∈ S^{1,1}_{μ,L}` with
`0 ≤ μ ≤ L < ∞`, let `x*` be a global minimiser of `f`, and let `(α, γ, x, y, v)` be a run of
Algorithm 1 (equivalently, of (96)–(97) with `Lα_k² = γ_{k+1}`). Then, with `ℒ_k` the Lyapunov
function (74):
* `0 < α_k ≤ 1` for every `k`;
* (98) `ℒ_{k+1} ≤ (1 − α_k)ℒ_k` for every `k ∈ ℕ`;
* (99) `ℒ_k ≤ ℒ₀ · min{4L/(√γ₀ k + 2√L)², (1 − √(min{γ₁, μ}/L))^k}` for every `k ≥ 0`;
* (100) `ℒ_k ≤ C_{γ₀,L} · min{4/k², (1 − √(min{γ₁, μ}/L))^{k−1}}` for every `k ≥ 1`, where
  (89) `C_{γ₀,L} = (L/γ₀)(f(x₀) − f(x*)) + (L/2)‖v₀ − x*‖²`. -/

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
