In the setting of Claim 4.8 (two agents, k≥3k\ge3k≥3 tasks, a truthful direct mechanism (x,p)(x,p)(x,p), t≡1t \equiv 1t≡1 with ∣x1(t)∣≤∣x2(t)∣|x^1(t)|\le|x^2(t)|∣x1(t)∣≤∣x2(t)∣, x=x1(t)x = x^1(t)x=x1(t), 0<ε<10<\varepsilon<10<ε<1 and t^=t(x→1ε, xˉ→11+ε)\hat t = t(x\xrightarrow{1}\varepsilon,\ \bar x\xrightarrow{1}1+\varepsilon)t^=t(x1ε, xˉ11+ε)), assume that ∣x2(t)∣|x^2(t)|∣x2(t)∣ is even. Then the mechanism's make-span at t^\hat tt^ equals ∣x2(t)∣|x^2(t)|∣x2(t)∣, while some allocation yyy does much better:

g(x(t^),t^)=∣x2(t)∣andg(y,t^)≤12 ∣x2(t)∣+k ε.g\big(x(\hat t),\hat t\big) = |x^2(t)| \qquad\text{and}\qquad g(y,\hat t) \le \tfrac12\,|x^2(t)| + k\,\varepsilon .g(x(t^),t^)=∣x2(t)∣andg(y,t^)≤21∣x2(t)∣+kε.

(The allocation meant is the one giving agent 1, in addition to x1(t)x^1(t)x1(t), half of agent 2's original tasks.) Letting ε→0\varepsilon \to 0ε→0 this gives the ratio 222 in the lower bound.

Formalization Note Agents 1 and 2 are 0 and 1 in Fin 2. The good allocation yyy is existentially quantified. The odd case of the paper's proof is not part of this statement.

/-- The ratio step of the proof of Theorem 4.6 (even case): in the setting of Claim 4.8, if
`|x²(t)|` is even then at `t̂` the mechanism's make-span is `|x²(t)|`, while some allocation has
make-span at most `|x²(t)|/2 + k·ε`. -/

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
