Let XXX be a nonempty finite set and let ddd be a semimetric on the set A(X)\mathcal A(X)A(X) of acyclic orders on XXX, with values in [0,∞)[0,\infty)[0,∞). Then ddd satisfies Axioms 1, 3 and 4 if and only if there is a positive measure μ\muμ on 2X2^X2X such that

d(≿,⊵)=Dμ(≿,⊵)=∑S⊆Xμ(M(S,≿)△M(S,⊵))for all ≿,⊵∈A(X).d(\succsim,\trianglerighteq)=D^\mu(\succsim,\trianglerighteq)=\sum_{S\subseteq X}\mu\big(M(S,\succsim)\triangle M(S,\trianglerighteq)\big)\qquad\text{for all }\succsim,\trianglerighteq\in\mathcal A(X).d(≿,⊵)=Dμ(≿,⊵)=S⊆X∑μ(M(S,≿)△M(S,⊵))for all ≿,⊵∈A(X).

The axioms are: (1) additivity along orders in-between two given orders, where "in-between" means reachable by one-step perturbations obeying the consistency condition (2) of p. 10; (3) the distance of a single addition or deletion of (a,b)(a,b)(a,b) is 2N(b,≿)−12^{N(b,\succsim)-1}2N(b,≿)−1, resp. 2N(b,≿)2^{N(b,\succsim)}2N(b,≿), times d(≿ab,≿ab+)d(\succsim_{ab},\succsim^+_{ab})d(≿ab,≿ab+); (4) orders with the same strict part are at distance 000. The theorem identifies the μ\muμ-top-difference semimetrics, which compare two preferences by the maximal elements they select from every menu, as exactly the semimetrics with these three properties.

Formalization Note Relations are X → X → Prop and ddd is a real function on all of them; IsSemimetric d (nonnegativity, d(R,R)=0d(R,R)=0d(R,R)=0, symmetry, triangle inequality on acyclic orders) is the pseudometric reading of "semimetric", and the conclusion asserts equality only on acyclic orders. One measure μ\muμ, given by point weights w≥0w\ge0w≥0 with μ(T)=∑x∈Tw(x)\mu(T)=\sum_{x\in T}w(x)μ(T)=∑x∈Tw(x), serves all pairs (the zero measure is allowed, as in footnote 14). Axiom 3's ⊕\oplus⊕ clause applies only when ≿⊕(a,b)\succsim\oplus(a,b)≿⊕(a,b) is acyclic, as on p. 8. Axiom 1 uses the paper's "in-between", not the literature's weaker betweenness.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
