If A + B ⊆ {−k, −1, 0, 1, m} with |A| = 2, |B| = 3, k ≥ 4 and 2 ≤ m ≤ k, then m = 2 and A + B = {−1, 0, 1, 2}

Let k,mk, mk,m be integers with k≥4k \geq 4k≥4 and 2≤m≤k2 \leq m \leq k2≤m≤k, and let A,BA, BA,B be finite sets of integers with ∣A∣=2|A| = 2∣A∣=2, ∣B∣=3|B| = 3∣B∣=3 and A+B⊆{−k,−1,0,1,m}A + B \subseteq \{-k, -1, 0, 1, m\}A+B⊆{−k,−1,0,1,m}. Then m=2m = 2m=2 and A+B={−1,0,1,2}A + B = \{-1, 0, 1, 2\}A+B={−1,0,1,2}.

Proof. Write A={a,a+d}A = \{a, a + d\}A={a,a+d} with d≥1d \geq 1d≥1. For each of the three b∈Bb \in Bb∈B, s=a+bs = a + bs=a+b and s+ds + ds+d lie in SSS, so the difference ddd is taken at three distinct lower ends. The positive differences of SSS are 1,1,2,m−1,m,m+1,k−1,k,k+1,k+m1, 1, 2, m - 1, m, m + 1, k - 1, k, k + 1, k + m1,1,2,m−1,m,m+1,k−1,k,k+1,k+m, and as k−1≥3k - 1 \geq 3k−1≥3 only d=1d = 1d=1 with m=2m = 2m=2 occurs three times, at s=−1,0,1s = -1, 0, 1s=−1,0,1. So a+B={−1,0,1}a + B = \{-1, 0, 1\}a+B={−1,0,1} and A+B={−1,0,1,2}A + B = \{-1, 0, 1, 2\}A+B={−1,0,1,2}. The hypothesis m≤km \leq km≤k is not used.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
