This finite-sum lemma states that a function fixing zero commutes with the step sum associated with a strictly increasing partition.

Let π:Fin⁡(M+1)→R\pi:\operatorname{Fin}(M+1)\to\mathbb Rπ:Fin(M+1)→R be strictly monotone, let f:Fin⁡(M)→Rf:\operatorname{Fin}(M)\to\mathbb Rf:Fin(M)→R, let s∈Rs\in\mathbb Rs∈R, and let g:R→Rg:\mathbb R\to\mathbb Rg:R→R satisfy g(0)=0g(0)=0g(0)=0. Then

g ⁣(∑j=0M−11(πj,πj+1](s)fj)=∑j=0M−11(πj,πj+1](s)g(fj).g\!\left(\sum_{j=0}^{M-1}\mathbf 1_{(\pi_j,\pi_{j+1}]}(s)f_j\right) =\sum_{j=0}^{M-1}\mathbf 1_{(\pi_j,\pi_{j+1}]}(s)g(f_j).g(j=0∑M−11(πj,πj+1](s)fj)=j=0∑M−11(πj,πj+1](s)g(fj).

Because the partition is strictly increasing, at most one step is active. The lemma is useful for passing powers and other zero-preserving operations through elementary-integrand evaluations.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
