Assume the affirmative statement of Erdős Problem 97 for every nonempty finite convex-independent point set in the Euclidean plane. Then every finite convex-independent set AAA, including the empty set, satisfies

u(A)≤3∣A∣,u(A)\le3|A|,u(A)≤3∣A∣,

and the extremal function satisfies

Uc(n)=O(n).U_c(n)=O(n).Uc(n)=O(n).

Here u(A)u(A)u(A) counts unordered pairs of distinct points at distance one, each pair once, and Uc(n)U_c(n)Uc(n) is the supremum of these counts over convex-independent n-point sets. Both conclusions are required. This is a conditional theorem, with Problem 97 as an explicit hypothesis. The repository records the conditional peeling proof and the subsequent supremum-to-Big-O step; transferring both makes the complete link between the two mission targets reusable.

What the Lean code literally says, in plain math · gpt-5.6-luna

Assume that every nonempty finite set CCC of points in the real Euclidean plane whose points all lie outside the real convex hull of the remaining points fails to have the following property: for every p∈Cp\in Cp∈C there is a positive real radius r>0r>0r>0 such that {q∈C:dist⁡(p,q)=r}\{q\in C : \operatorname{dist}(p,q)=r\}{q∈C:dist(p,q)=r} has cardinality at least 444. Then both of the following hold: for every finite set AAA of plane points satisfying the same convex-hull condition, including the possibility that AAA is empty, the number unitDistancePairsCount⁡(A)\operatorname{unitDistancePairsCount}(A)unitDistancePairsCount(A) of unordered two-element pairs from AAA counted once, where a pair {p,q}\{p,q\}{p,q} is counted exactly when 0<dist⁡(p,q)0<\operatorname{dist}(p,q)0<dist(p,q) and dist⁡(p,q)=1\operatorname{dist}(p,q)=1dist(p,q)=1, is at most 3∣A∣3|A|3∣A∣; and the real-valued function sending nnn to the natural-number supremum of these unit-distance counts over finite convex-independent point sets of cardinality nnn grows as O(n)O(n)O(n) along natural numbers tending to infinity.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
