Let 0<s1≤s20<s_1\le s_20<s1≤s2 be the speeds of two links and let φ=(1+5)/2\varphi=(1+\sqrt5)/2φ=(1+5)/2 be the golden ratio. The two numbers

p11=s12s2(s1+s2),p21=1−s22s1(s1+s2)p_1^1=\frac{s_1^2}{s_2(s_1+s_2)},\qquad p_2^1=1-\frac{s_2^2}{s_1(s_1+s_2)}p11=s2(s1+s2)s12,p21=1−s1(s1+s2)s22

both lie in the interval [0,1][0,1][0,1] if and only if

s2≤φ s1.s_2\le\varphi\, s_1 .s2≤φs1.

These are the probabilities of the equilibrium used in the proof of Theorem 4. The "if" direction is why Theorem 4 assumes s2≤φs1s_2\le\varphi s_1s2≤φs1; the "only if" direction is the closing remark of the proof that for s2/s1>φs_2/s_1>\varphis2/s1>φ these probabilities fall outside [0,1][0,1][0,1].

Formalization Note The ratio condition s2/s1≤φs_2/s_1\le\varphis2/s1≤φ is written s2≤φs1s_2\le\varphi s_1s2≤φs1, which is equivalent because s1>0s_1>0s1>0. The golden ratio is Mathlib's Real.goldenRatio, defined as (1+5)/2(1+\sqrt5)/2(1+5)/2.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
