Let H(n)H(n)H(n) be the least mmm such that some f:P(X)→Xf:\mathcal P(X)\to Xf:P(X)→X, ∣X∣=n|X|=n∣X∣=n, satisfies {f(A):A⊆Y}=X\{f(A):A\subseteq Y\}=X{f(A):A⊆Y}=X for all Y⊆XY\subseteq XY⊆X with ∣Y∣≥m|Y|\ge m∣Y∣≥m (Erdős Problem 624). Theorem. For n≥1n\ge1n≥1,

n≤2H(n)and hence⌈log⁡2n⌉≤H(n).n\le 2^{H(n)}\qquad\text{and hence}\qquad \lceil\log_2 n\rceil\le H(n).n≤2H(n)and hence⌈log2n⌉≤H(n).

A set YYY of size mmm has only 2m2^m2m subsets, so its image under fff has at most 2m2^m2m elements. This is the trivial lower bound that Erdős Problem 624 asks to beat by an unbounded amount.

Formalization Note. ⌈log⁡2n⌉\lceil\log_2 n\rceil⌈log2n⌉ is Nat.clog 2 n.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
