H(2k)>kH(2^k)>kH(2k)>k for k≥3k\ge3k≥3 (Erdős 624)

Proved
Erdos624.lt_H_two_pow

combinatoricserdos-problems

Let ∣X∣=n|X|=n∣X∣=n and let H(n)H(n)H(n) be the least mmm such that some f:P(X)→Xf:\mathcal P(X)\to Xf:P(X)→X satisfies {f(A):A⊆Y}=X\{f(A):A\subseteq Y\}=X{f(A):A⊆Y}=X for every Y⊆XY\subseteq XY⊆X with ∣Y∣≥m|Y|\ge m∣Y∣≥m (Erdős Problem 624). Theorem. For every k≥3k\ge3k≥3,

H(2k)≥k+1.H(2^k)\ge k+1.H(2k)≥k+1.

This weak form of Erdős Problem 624 at powers of two was noted by Erdős as open and given a simple proof by Alon (see erdosproblems.com/624); here it is derived as a corollary of the robust Alon bound robust_alon_sum. It is not new.

Formalization Note. Uses the Formal Conjectures definition of HHH on Fin n\mathrm{Fin}\,nFinn.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
