A tree witness θ:N×Z→{0,1}\theta:\mathbb N\times\mathbb Z\to\{0,1\}θ:N×Z→{0,1} defines a strict total order ≺θ\prec_\theta≺θ on Z\mathbb ZZ (milestone framework). A finite word TTT of integers is θ\thetaθ-safe if the sequence "letters of TTT in order, then all remaining integers in ≺θ\prec_\theta≺θ-order" has no monotone 4-term arithmetic progression; positions are first occurrences. For an in-order pair (a,b)(a,b)(a,b) of TTT (aaa before bbb), call 2b−a2b-a2b−a its third term, 3b−2a3b-2a3b−2a its fourth term, and ν2(b−a)\nu_2(b-a)ν2(b−a) its level. An open path in TTT is a family of in-order pairs (ai,bi)(a_i,b_i)(ai,bi), 0≤i<m0\le i<m0≤i<m, of letters of TTT with

3bi−2ai  =  2bi+1−ai+1(0≤i<m−1),3b_i-2a_i \;=\; 2b_{i+1}-a_{i+1}\qquad(0\le i<m-1),3bi−2ai=2bi+1−ai+1(0≤i<m−1),

no third term 2bi−ai2b_i-a_i2bi−ai in TTT, and the fourth term 3bm−1−2am−13b_{m-1}-2a_{m-1}3bm−1−2am−1 of the last pair also absent from TTT. Theorem (ruler law for open paths). If TTT is θ\thetaθ-safe for some tree witness θ\thetaθ and contains such an open path, then for all i<j<mi<j<mi<j<m with ν2(bi−ai)=ν2(bj−aj)\nu_2(b_i-a_i)=\nu_2(b_j-a_j)ν2(bi−ai)=ν2(bj−aj) there is an index lll with i<l<ji<l<ji<l<j and ν2(bl−al)<ν2(bi−ai)\nu_2(b_l-a_l)<\nu_2(b_i-a_i)ν2(bl−al)<ν2(bi−ai).

So the sequence of levels along an open path behaves like a ruler sequence: between two equal levels a strictly lower one occurs. In particular the minimal level is attained exactly once, and a path with rrr distinct levels has length at most 2r−12^r-12r−1. The reason: every pair of the path has both its third and fourth term missing, so safety fixes its orientation at its node; the points ti=2bi−ait_i=2b_i-a_iti=2bi−ai satisfy ti+1−ti=bi−ait_{i+1}-t_i=b_i-a_iti+1−ti=bi−ai, which forces two consecutive pairs of the same level (with only higher levels between) to sit at the same node with opposite orientation. This is the acyclic analogue of milestone 147 (open cycles are never tree-safe). It is a structural lemma about the tree-witness approach to Erdős #195, not a construction or an impossibility result.

Formalization note: words are List ℤ, positions via List.idxOf, pairs are a b : ℕ → ℤ on indices i < m, levels are padicValInt 2 (b i - a i); safety is ∃ θ, Safe (treeLt θ) T.
