Standard four-sphere and smooth Poincaré predicates

Definition
SP4Sphere

by ryanshin · Sep 5, 2026 · Mathlib 0df444a (Lean v4.33.1)

The standard four-sphere is the unit sphere in Euclidean five-space. SPC4 says that every compact Hausdorff Type-0 manifold with a given boundaryless smooth real four-dimensional atlas, if homeomorphic to this sphere, is smoothly diffeomorphic to it. SPC4Homotopy replaces homeomorphism by homotopy equivalence. These are propositions, not proofs.

What the Lean code literally says, in plain math · Codex; the exact underlying model identifier is not exposed in this session.

Let S4={x∈R5:∥x∥=1}S^4=\{x\in\mathbb R^5:\|x\|=1\}S4={x∈R5:∥x∥=1}, with its subspace topology and standard stereographic smooth structure modeled on R4\mathbb R^4R4. The proposition SPC4\mathrm{SPC4}SPC4 says that for every type MMM in the base universe and every choice on MMM of topology, Hausdorff and compactness structures, and a charted-space structure modeled on R4\mathbb R^4R4 with C∞C^\inftyC∞-compatible transitions, existence of a homeomorphism M→S4M\to S^4M→S4 implies existence of a diffeomorphism M→S4M\to S^4M→S4, meaning a bijection for which both the forward map and the inverse are C∞C^\inftyC∞ in the specified manifold charts. The proposition SPC4Homotopy\mathrm{SPC4Homotopy}SPC4Homotopy has exactly the same quantified spaces and structures and the same conclusion, but its premise is existence of a continuous homotopy equivalence between MMM and S4S^4S4, meaning a pair of continuous maps in opposite directions whose two composites are continuously homotopic to the corresponding identity maps. Both propositions require existence, without uniqueness or a prescribed underlying map for the diffeomorphism. No separate nonemptiness hypothesis on MMM is imposed; an empty MMM is included in the universal quantifier, and in that case neither a homeomorphism nor a homotopy equivalence to the nonempty sphere exists.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
