Let DDD be a small category with a coverage KKK and a terminal object TTT (written 111 in the paper), and suppose (D,K,T)(D,K,T)(D,K,T) is a concrete site: representables are sheaves, hom⁡(1,−)\operatorname{hom}(1,-)hom(1,−) is faithful, and covering families are jointly surjective on points. Write X‾=X(1)\underline{X}=X(1)X=X(1) for the underlying set of a presheaf XXX and φ‾:D‾→X‾\underline{\varphi}:\underline{D}\to\underline{X}φ:D→X, d↦X(d)(φ)d\mapsto X(d)(\varphi)d↦X(d)(φ), for the underlying function of a plot φ∈X(D)\varphi\in X(D)φ∈X(D).

For every object XXX of DDD, the representable presheaf hom⁡(−,X):Dop→Set\operatorname{hom}(-,X):D^{\mathrm{op}}\to\mathrm{Set}hom(−,X):Dop→Set is a DDD space:

∀X∈D,hom⁡(−,X) is a sheaf for K and is concrete.\forall X\in D,\qquad \operatorname{hom}(-,X)\ \text{is a sheaf for }K\text{ and is concrete.}∀X∈D,hom(−,X) is a sheaf for K and is concrete.

The result embeds the site into its category of generalized spaces via the Yoneda embedding.

Formalization Note The site is small (DDD in universe uuu, presheaves valued in Typeu\mathrm{Type}_uTypeu), covering families are presieves, and the terminal domain is passed explicitly as (T,hT)(T, h_T)(T,hT). The proposition's second sentence, that the underlying set of hom⁡(−,X)\operatorname{hom}(-,X)hom(−,X) is X‾=hom⁡(1,X)\underline X=\operatorname{hom}(1,X)X=hom(1,X), holds by definition in Lean (the value of the Yoneda presheaf at TTT is the hom-set T→XT\to XT→X) and is not restated.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
