Let an instance of the two-stage robust binary program with constraint uncertainty be given, with X⊆{0,1}N\mathcal X\subseteq\{0,1\}^NX⊆{0,1}N, Y⊆{0,1}M\mathcal Y\subseteq\{0,1\}^MY⊆{0,1}M and Ξ={ξ:Aξ≤b}\Xi=\{\xi:A\xi\le b\}Ξ={ξ:Aξ≤b} nonempty and bounded, and let K∈NK\in\mathbb NK∈N be the number of policies. Denote by φ\varphiφ and φε\varphi_\varepsilonφε the objective functions of problems (6) and (6ε)(6_\varepsilon)(6ε), and by dom(6)\mathrm{dom}(6)dom(6) and dom(6ε)\mathrm{dom}(6_\varepsilon)dom(6ε) their effective domains: the decisions (x,{yk}k∈K)∈X×YK(x,\{y^k\}_{k\in\mathcal K})\in\mathcal X\times\mathcal Y^K(x,{yk}k∈K)∈X×YK at which the objective value is finite (not +∞+\infty+∞). Then:

  1. dom(6ε)=dom(6)\mathrm{dom}(6_\varepsilon)=\mathrm{dom}(6)dom(6ε)=dom(6) for all sufficiently small ε>0\varepsilon>0ε>0: there is ε0>0\varepsilon_0>0ε0>0 with
dom(6ε)=dom(6)for all ε∈(0,ε0];\mathrm{dom}(6_\varepsilon)=\mathrm{dom}(6)\qquad\text{for all }\varepsilon\in(0,\varepsilon_0];dom(6ε)=dom(6)for all ε∈(0,ε0];
  1. over the effective domain, φε\varphi_\varepsilonφε converges uniformly to φ\varphiφ as ε↓0\varepsilon\downarrow0ε↓0: for every κ>0\kappa>0κ>0 there is ε0>0\varepsilon_0>0ε0>0 such that for all ε∈(0,ε0]\varepsilon\in(0,\varepsilon_0]ε∈(0,ε0] and all (x,{yk})∈dom(6)(x,\{y^k\})\in\mathrm{dom}(6)(x,{yk})∈dom(6) the values φ(x,{yk})\varphi(x,\{y^k\})φ(x,{yk}) and φε(x,{yk})\varphi_\varepsilon(x,\{y^k\})φε(x,{yk}) are real numbers with
∣φε(x,{yk})−φ(x,{yk})∣≤κ.\big|\varphi_\varepsilon(x,\{y^k\})-\varphi(x,\{y^k\})\big|\le\kappa .φε(x,{yk})−φ(x,{yk})≤κ.

Since (6) is equivalent to the K-adaptability problem PK\mathcal P_KPK (Proposition 1), this justifies solving the problems (6ε)(6_\varepsilon)(6ε), whose uncertainty sets are closed, in place of PK\mathcal P_KPK.

Formalization Note Objective values are extended reals; "finite (i.e., do not evaluate to +∞+\infty+∞)" is read as <+∞<+\infty<+∞, as the paper says. Part (ii) is stated with a single threshold ε0\varepsilon_0ε0 that works for every decision of dom(6)\mathrm{dom}(6)dom(6) at once, which is what "uniformly" means; since by (i) the two domains coincide for small ε\varepsilonε, "over their effective domains" is the domain of (6). The remark after the proposition (convergence of the optimal values) is not part of the statement.

open Problem

/-- **Proposition 2** (pp. 18–19). With `𝒳 ⊆ {0,1}^N`, `𝒴 ⊆ {0,1}^M` and `Ξ` a nonempty bounded
polyhedron (all part of `Problem`), and any number `K` of policies:
(i) `dom(6_ε) = dom(6)` for all sufficiently small `ε > 0`; and
(ii) over the effective domain, the objective functions of (6_ε) converge uniformly to the
objective function of (6) as `ε ↓ 0`: for every `κ > 0` there is `ε₀ > 0` such that for every
`ε ∈ (0, ε₀]` and every decision in `dom(6)` both objective values are real numbers within `κ`
of each other. -/

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
