Let GGG be a finite group with a Fourier family (ρi)i∈G^(\rho_i)_{i\in\widehat{G}}(ρi)i∈G: a finite index set G^\widehat{G}G and, for each iii, a finite-dimensional complex inner product space ViV_iVi of dimension di>0d_i>0di>0 with an irreducible unitary representation ρi\rho_iρi of GGG, such that ρi≅ρj\rho_i\cong\rho_jρi≅ρj only if i=ji=ji=j, and such that ∑idiχi(g)\sum_i d_i\chi_i(g)∑idiχi(g) equals ∣G∣|G|∣G∣ for g=1g=1g=1 and 000 otherwise, where χi(g)=tr⁡ρi(g)\chi_i(g)=\operatorname{tr}\rho_i(g)χi(g)=trρi(g). Let

ki(g)=di∣G∣ χi(g−1)k_i(g)=\frac{d_i}{|G|}\,\chi_i(g^{-1})ki(g)=∣G∣diχi(g−1)

be the character kernel of ρi\rho_iρi. Then for all i,j∈G^i,j\in\widehat{G}i,j∈G,

∑g∈Gki(g) ρj(g)={idVj,i=j,0,i≠j.\sum_{g\in G}k_i(g)\,\rho_j(g)=\begin{cases}\mathrm{id}_{V_j}, & i=j,\\ 0, & i\ne j.\end{cases}g∈G∑ki(g)ρj(g)={idVj,0,i=j,i=j.

In other words, the isotypic projector Pi=∑gki(g)ρ(g)P_i=\sum_g k_i(g)\rho(g)Pi=∑gki(g)ρ(g) acts as the identity on the member ρi\rho_iρi of the family and kills every other member. This is the basic computation behind the Fourier decomposition on GGG: from it one derives that the PiP_iPi are idempotent, mutually annihilating and sum to the identity in every representation, i.e. that they are the projections onto the isotypic components.

Formalization Note The left-hand side is integrated (F.rep j) (F.kernel i), with integrated ρ f = ∑ g, f g • ρ g; the right-hand side is if i = j then 1 else 0 in Module.End ℂ (F.Space j). The family is a structure F : Family G whose fields encode the hypotheses listed above.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
