Let KKK be a field and a0,a1∈K[X]a_0, a_1 \in K[X]a0,a1∈K[X] coprime with 1≤max⁡(deg⁡a0,deg⁡a1)≤21 \leq \max(\deg a_0, \deg a_1) \leq 21≤max(dega0,dega1)≤2. Then spanK(a0,a1)=spanK(p,q)\mathrm{span}_K(a_0, a_1) = \mathrm{span}_K(p, q)spanK(a0,a1)=spanK(p,q) for a pair (p,q)(p, q)(p,q) of one of the forms

  • (1,X)(1, X)(1,X);
  • (1,X2+αX)(1, X^2 + \alpha X)(1,X2+αX) with α∈K\alpha \in Kα∈K;
  • (X,X2+β)(X, X^2 + \beta)(X,X2+β) with β≠0\beta \neq 0β=0;
  • (X+β,X2+γX)(X + \beta, X^2 + \gamma X)(X+β,X2+γX) with β≠0\beta \neq 0β=0 and γ≠β\gamma \neq \betaγ=β.

Proof. Coprimality makes a0,a1a_0, a_1a0,a1 linearly independent, so P=span(a0,a1)P = \mathrm{span}(a_0, a_1)P=span(a0,a1) is a plane. If neither has an X2X^2X2 term, P⊆span(1,X)P \subseteq \mathrm{span}(1, X)P⊆span(1,X) and the two are equal by dimension. Otherwise PPP contains a monic f=X2+dX+ef = X^2 + dX + ef=X2+dX+e and a non-zero rrr of degree at most one (the combination of a0,a1a_0, a_1a0,a1 that kills the X2X^2X2 terms): if rrr is constant, P=span(1,X2+dX)P = \mathrm{span}(1, X^2 + dX)P=span(1,X2+dX); otherwise X+β∈PX + \beta \in PX+β∈P, and P=span(X,X2+e)P = \mathrm{span}(X, X^2 + e)P=span(X,X2+e) with e≠0e \neq 0e=0 when β=0\beta = 0β=0, or P=span(X+β,X2+γX)P = \mathrm{span}(X + \beta, X^2 + \gamma X)P=span(X+β,X2+γX) with γ=d−e/β≠β\gamma = d - e/\beta \neq \betaγ=d−e/β=β when β≠0\beta \neq 0β=0, the inequalities because XXX, resp. X+βX + \betaX+β, is not a common factor. Each equality holds because two polynomials of distinct degrees in PPP span the plane PPP.

Novelty. An elementary fact about polynomials over a field; routine.
