Let ν\nuν and π\piπ be probability distributions on a finite set Ω\OmegaΩ, with π(x)>0\pi(x)>0π(x)>0 for every xxx. Then

1χ2(ν,π)+1≤∑x∈Ων(x)π(x)ν(x)=⟨ν∣π⟩,\frac{1}{\sqrt{\chi^2(\nu,\pi)+1}}\le\sum_{x\in\Omega}\nu(x)\sqrt{\frac{\pi(x)}{\nu(x)}}=\langle\nu|\pi\rangle,χ2(ν,π)+11≤x∈Ω∑ν(x)ν(x)π(x)=⟨ν∣π⟩,

where ∣ν⟩=∑xν(x)∣x⟩|\nu\rangle=\sum_x\sqrt{\nu(x)}|x\rangle∣ν⟩=∑xν(x)∣x⟩ and ∣π⟩=∑xπ(x)∣x⟩|\pi\rangle=\sum_x\sqrt{\pi(x)}|x\rangle∣π⟩=∑xπ(x)∣x⟩ are the quantum sample states and ⟨ν∣π⟩\langle\nu|\pi\rangle⟨ν∣π⟩ is their (complex) inner product. Terms with ν(x)=0\nu(x)=0ν(x)=0 contribute 000 to the middle sum.

Combined with a bound on χ2\chi^2χ2, this gives a lower bound on the overlap of quantum samples.

Formalization Note The positivity of π\piπ is implicit on the page (the display divides by π(x)\pi(x)π(x)) and is stated as a hypothesis. In Lean, ν(x)π(x)/ν(x)\nu(x)\sqrt{\pi(x)/\nu(x)}ν(x)π(x)/ν(x) evaluates to 000 when ν(x)=0\nu(x)=0ν(x)=0, which matches the sum over the support of ν\nuν. The equality with ⟨ν∣π⟩\langle\nu|\pi\rangle⟨ν∣π⟩ is stated in C\mathbb CC.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
