Counterexample structure (c) — Two E677 tables that agree off one row are equal

Let ⋅\cdot⋅ and ⋆\star⋆ be two operations on the same finite set MMM, both satisfying E677. Suppose that u⋆v=u⋅vu\star v=u\cdot vu⋆v=u⋅v for every u≠au\ne au=a and every vvv, so that the two tables can differ only in the row of aaa. Then ⋆=⋅\star=\cdot⋆=⋅. Neither operation is assumed to satisfy E255.

So a search that changes one row of a finite E677 table never reaches a different E677 table; in particular, no counterexample is one row away from an E677 table that satisfies E255.

Related results. In one finite E677 table, two rows are never equal: if a⋅x=b⋅xa\cdot x=b\cdot xa⋅x=b⋅x for every xxx, then a=ba=ba=b (I. Tencer, ETP Zulip thread "FINITE: 677 -> 255", 2024-12-21; also J. Hyun, same thread, 2026-05-17). The statement above compares two tables. The two-table statement was not found in the sources searched: the ETP blueprint, the ETP paper (arXiv:2512.07087v2) and the ETP Zulip thread up to 2026-10-14.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
