Eq. (A 3) — W(n)=[I+∑j=1n−1(Pj−Π)−Π]ρ+V(0)W(n) = [I + \sum_{j=1}^{n-1}(P^j-\Pi) - \Pi]\rho + V(0)W(n)=[I+∑j=1n−1(Pj−Π)−Π]ρ+V(0) for constant terminal rewards

Let PPP be an irreducible row-stochastic matrix on a nonempty finite state set with stationary probability vector π\piπ, let Π\PiΠ be the matrix all of whose rows equal π\piπ, let ρ\rhoρ be the one-step rewards, G=∑iπiρiG = \sum_i\pi_i\rho_iG=∑iπiρi the gain, and let V(0)V(0)V(0) be a constant terminal-reward vector. With V(n)V(n)V(n) the nnn-step return and Wi(n)=Vi(n)−GnW_i(n) = V_i(n) - GnWi(n)=Vi(n)−Gn, for every n≥1n \ge 1n≥1

W(n)=[I+∑j=1n−1(Pj−Π)−Π]ρ+V(0).W(n) = \Bigl[I + \sum_{j=1}^{n-1}\bigl(P^j - \Pi\bigr) - \Pi\Bigr]\rho + V(0).W(n)=[I+j=1∑n−1(Pj−Π)−Π]ρ+V(0).

This expresses the finite-horizon bias through the partial sums whose Cesàro limit is the fundamental matrix.

Formalization Note The paper prints (A 3) with no condition on V(0)V(0)V(0). For general V(0)V(0)V(0) the last term is PnV(0)P^n V(0)PnV(0) rather than V(0)V(0)V(0); the two agree for all nnn exactly when PV(0)=V(0)PV(0) = V(0)PV(0)=V(0), i.e. (for irreducible PPP) when V(0)V(0)V(0) is constant, and that hypothesis is added. The formula is for n≥1n \ge 1n≥1, as printed.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
