For every finite point set PPP in the Euclidean plane, there is a simple graph GGG whose vertex type is the finite set PPP and whose edge set is finite such that

unitDist⁡(P)−∣P∣≤∣E(G)∣,cr⁡(G)≤2∣P∣2.\operatorname{unitDist}(P)-|P|\le |E(G)|,\qquad\operatorname{cr}(G)\le 2|P|^2.unitDist(P)−∣P∣≤∣E(G)∣,cr(G)≤2∣P∣2.

The graph is obtained from the unit-distance relations by selecting polygonal arcs and then replacing the resulting geometric arcs by an ordinary polygonal drawing. Thus its edge count records the unit-distance count up to the vertex correction, while its crossing number is controlled quadratically by the size of PPP. This construction is the geometric bridge that allows the crossing lemma to be applied to unit distances.

Formalization Note Lean represents the finite point set as a Finset, regards G as a graph on the subtype of elements of P, and records finiteness of the graph edge set with an explicit Fintype G.edgeSet instance.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
