Let ppp be a prime and KKK a number field, with E=OK×E = \mathcal{O}_K^\timesE=OK× and E‾\overline{E}E the ppp-adic closure of ι(E)\iota(E)ι(E) in the semilocal units U=∏℘∣pOK℘×U = \prod_{\wp\mid p}\mathcal{O}_{K_\wp}^\timesU=∏℘∣pOK℘×. Then Dirichlet's unit rank splits as the Leopoldt defect plus the Zp\mathbb{Z}_pZp-rank of the closure:

Z-rk(E)  =  DL(K)+Zp-rk(E‾).\mathbb{Z}\text{-rk}(E) \;=\; \mathcal{D}_L(K) + \mathbb{Z}_p\text{-rk}(\overline{E}).Z-rk(E)=DL(K)+Zp-rk(E).

This is the defining relation DL(K)=Z-rk(E)−Zp-rk(E‾)\mathcal{D}_L(K) = \mathbb{Z}\text{-rk}(E) - \mathbb{Z}_p\text{-rk}(\overline{E})DL(K)=Z-rk(E)−Zp-rk(E) read as an identity of natural numbers; it holds exactly because Zp-rk(E‾)≤Z-rk(E)\mathbb{Z}_p\text{-rk}(\overline{E}) \le \mathbb{Z}\text{-rk}(E)Zp-rk(E)≤Z-rk(E), so that the truncated subtraction used in the Lean definition of defect coincides with the true difference. It lets one move freely between statements about the defect and statements about the rank of E‾\overline{E}E.

Formalization Note defect p K is Units.rank K - zpRankBelow p (finrank ℚ K) (unitClosure p K) with truncated natural-number subtraction (Definitions.Def_LeopoldtDefect).

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
