Consider a robust discounted MDP with finite state space, finite nonempty action set, costs c≥0c\ge0c≥0, nonempty row sets Pia⊆Δn\mathcal P_i^a\subseteq\Delta_nPia⊆Δn, and a discount factor 0<ν<10<\nu<10<ν<1. Let cmax⁡=max⁡i,ac(i,a)c_{\max}=\max_{i,a}c(i,a)cmax=maxi,ac(i,a) and εN=νNcmax⁡/(1−ν)\varepsilon_N=\nu^N c_{\max}/(1-\nu)εN=νNcmax/(1−ν). Then for every controller policy π∈Π\pi\in\Piπ∈Π, every nature policy τ∈T\tau\in\mathcal Tτ∈T and every horizon NNN,

CN(π,τ)≤C∞(π,τ)≤CN(π,τ)+εN.C_N(\pi,\tau)\le C_\infty(\pi,\tau)\le C_N(\pi,\tau)+\varepsilon_N .CN(π,τ)≤C∞(π,τ)≤CN(π,τ)+εN.

This elementary bound is used in every step of the proof of Theorem 4: it transfers statements about finite-horizon values to infinite-horizon ones with an error that vanishes at geometric rate ν\nuν.

What the Lean code literally says, in plain math · claude-opus-5-5

Setting. Let n∈Nn\in\mathbb Nn∈N with states {0,…,n−1}\{0,\dots,n-1\}{0,…,n−1}, and let AAA be a finite, nonempty set of actions. The model MMM gives:

  • a cost c(i,a)≥0c(i,a)\ge0c(i,a)≥0 for each state and action;
  • for each action aaa and state iii, a nonempty set Pia\mathcal P_i^aPia of probability vectors on the states (entries ≥0\ge0≥0 summing to 1). No convexity or closedness is assumed.

Let ν\nuν be a real number with 0<ν<10<\nu<10<ν<1, and let i0i_0i0 be an initial state.

  • A controller policy π=(πt)t∈N\pi=(\pi_t)_{t\in\mathbb N}π=(πt)t∈N assigns an action πt(i)\pi_t(i)πt(i) to each time ttt and state iii.
  • A nature policy τ=(Pt)t∈N\tau=(P_t)_{t\in\mathbb N}τ=(Pt)t∈N assigns to each time a family of matrices (Pta)a∈A(P_t^a)_{a\in A}(Pta)a∈A with rows Pta(i,⋅)∈PiaP_t^a(i,\cdot)\in\mathcal P_i^aPta(i,⋅)∈Pia.

The state distribution is

μ0=ei0,μt+1(j)=∑iμt(i) Ptπt(i)(i,j).\mu_0=e_{i_0},\qquad \mu_{t+1}(j)=\sum_i\mu_t(i)\,P_t^{\pi_t(i)}(i,j).μ0=ei0,μt+1(j)=i∑μt(i)Ptπt(i)(i,j).

The costs are

CN(π,τ)=∑t=0N−1νt∑iμt(i) c(i,πt(i)),C∞(π,τ)=∑t≥0νt∑iμt(i) c(i,πt(i)).C_N(\pi,\tau)=\sum_{t=0}^{N-1}\nu^t\sum_i\mu_t(i)\,c(i,\pi_t(i)),\qquad C_\infty(\pi,\tau)=\sum_{t\ge0}\nu^t\sum_i\mu_t(i)\,c(i,\pi_t(i)).CN(π,τ)=t=0∑N−1νti∑μt(i)c(i,πt(i)),C∞(π,τ)=t≥0∑νti∑μt(i)c(i,πt(i)).

The infinite sum is taken as 000 if not summable. Here the terms are nonnegative and at most νtcmax⁡\nu^t c_{\max}νtcmax, so the series is summable. The remaining constants are cmax⁡=max⁡i,ac(i,a)c_{\max}=\max_{i,a}c(i,a)cmax=maxi,ac(i,a) and εN=νNcmax⁡/(1−ν)\varepsilon_N=\nu^N c_{\max}/(1-\nu)εN=νNcmax/(1−ν).

Claim. For every such MMM, ν\nuν, i0i_0i0, every controller policy π\piπ, every nature policy τ\tauτ and every N∈NN\in\mathbb NN∈N:

CN(π,τ)  ≤  C∞(π,τ)  ≤  CN(π,τ)+εN.C_N(\pi,\tau)\;\le\;C_\infty(\pi,\tau)\;\le\;C_N(\pi,\tau)+\varepsilon_N.CN(π,τ)≤C∞(π,τ)≤CN(π,τ)+εN.

Degenerate cases.

  • n=0n=0n=0: no initial state exists, so the statement is vacuous.
  • n=1n=1n=1: every transition row is (1)(1)(1).
  • One action: there is exactly one controller policy.
  • N=0N=0N=0: the claim reads 0≤C∞(π,τ)≤cmax⁡/(1−ν)0\le C_\infty(\pi,\tau)\le c_{\max}/(1-\nu)0≤C∞(π,τ)≤cmax/(1−ν).
  • Excluded values: ν=0\nu=0ν=0 and ν≥1\nu\ge1ν≥1 are excluded by hypothesis, so the division in εN\varepsilon_NεN is by a positive number.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
