Let OOO and III be finite sets, and let ψi∈CI\psi_i\in\mathbb C^Iψi∈CI for each i∈Oi\in Oi∈O. Suppose the Gram matrix is real: a real matrix GGG satisfies Gij=⟨ψi,ψj⟩G_{ij}=\langle\psi_i,\psi_j\rangleGij=⟨ψi,ψj⟩ after inclusion into C\mathbb CC. Write N=∣O∣N=|O|N=∣O∣ and give every vector weight 1/N1/N1/N. Then the pretty good measurement success quantity satisfies

PPGM({(1/N,ψi)}i∈O)=1N∑i∈O(Gii)2.P^{\mathrm{PGM}}\bigl(\{(1/N,\psi_i)\}_{i\in O}\bigr) =\frac1N\sum_{i\in O}\bigl(\sqrt G_{ii}\bigr)^2.PPGM({(1/N,ψi)}i∈O)=N1i∈O∑(Gii)2.

Here Gii\sqrt G_{ii}Gii denotes the iiith diagonal entry of the positive semidefinite matrix square root of GGG. The inverse square root in the PGM definition is the spectral pseudoinverse, with value zero at the zero eigenvalue. This identity connects state identification to Gram matrix estimates and applies to the PAC and agnostic hard ensembles.

Formalization Note This is the uniform-prior, real-Gram specialization of the Gram identity in §7.3.2. The identity is homogeneous and therefore also applies to vectors without a unit-norm assumption. If OOO is empty both sides are zero, with the convention 1/0=01/0=01/0=0.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
