Write λ\lambdaλ for Lebesgue measure on R\mathbb{R}R, call H⊆RH\subseteq\mathbb{R}H⊆R 1-periodic if x+1∈H  ⟺  x∈Hx+1\in H\iff x\in Hx+1∈H⟺x∈H for all x∈Rx\in\mathbb{R}x∈R, and for B⊆RB\subseteq\mathbb{R}B⊆R, N⊆NN\subseteq\mathbb{N}N⊆N and a real sequence a=(an)n∈Na=(a_n)_{n\in\mathbb{N}}a=(an)n∈N let

X(B,N,a)={x∈R: ∃ t∈[1,2]  ∀n∈N,  x+t an∉B}\mathcal X(B,N,a)=\bigl\{x\in\mathbb{R}:\ \exists\,t\in[1,2]\ \ \forall n\in N,\ \ x+t\,a_n\notin B\bigr\}X(B,N,a)={x∈R: ∃t∈[1,2]  ∀n∈N,  x+tan∈/B}

be the set of exceptional centers.

Theorem. Assume:

  1. B⊆RB\subseteq\mathbb{R}B⊆R is open and 1-periodic;
  2. N⊆NN\subseteq\mathbb{N}N⊆N, and every n∈Nn\in Nn∈N satisfies n≥1n\ge 1n≥1;
  3. an→0a_n\to 0an→0 as n→∞n\to\inftyn→∞;
  4. c∈[0,∞]c\in[0,\infty]c∈[0,∞] satisfies λ(B∩[0,1])+λ(X(B,N,a)∩[0,1])≤c\lambda\bigl(B\cap[0,1]\bigr)+\lambda\bigl(\mathcal X(B,N,a)\cap[0,1]\bigr)\le cλ(B∩[0,1])+λ(X(B,N,a)∩[0,1])≤c;
  5. ε>0\varepsilon>0ε>0.

Then there is an open, 1-periodic set H⊆RH\subseteq\mathbb{R}H⊆R with λ(H∩[0,1])≤c+ε\lambda(H\cap[0,1])\le c+\varepsilonλ(H∩[0,1])≤c+ε that is hit by every normalized progression:

∀x∈R  ∀t∈[1,2]  ∃ n∈N, n≥1:x+t an∈H.\forall x\in\mathbb{R}\ \ \forall t\in[1,2]\ \ \exists\,n\in\mathbb{N},\ n\ge 1:\quad x+t\,a_n\in H .∀x∈R  ∀t∈[1,2]  ∃n∈N, n≥1:x+tan∈H.

This is the deterministic repair step of a probabilistic construction: if an open periodic test set BBB has small density and its exceptional centers also have small density, then a genuine hitting set costs only ε\varepsilonε more. For an=2−na_n=2^{-n}an=2−n, the complement [0,1]∖H[0,1]\setminus H[0,1]∖H is a compact set of measure at least 1−(c+ε)1-(c+\varepsilon)1−(c+ε) that contains no set of the form {x+t 2−n:n≥1}\{x+t\,2^{-n}: n\ge 1\}{x+t2−n:n≥1} with x∈Rx\in\mathbb{R}x∈R and t∈[1,2]t\in[1,2]t∈[1,2].

Formalization Note The index nnn in the conclusion is any natural number n≥1n\ge 1n≥1; it need not belong to NNN. Measures and ccc are extended nonnegative reals, and ε\varepsilonε enters as ENNReal.ofReal ε.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
