Let QQQ be a convex subset of a finite-dimensional real inner-product space EEE, and let f,h:E→Rf, h : E \to \mathbb Rf,h:E→R be convex on QQQ and differentiable at every point of QQQ; hhh is the reference function. Let 0≤μ<L0 \le \mu < L0≤μ<L and suppose fff is LLL-smooth and μ\muμ-strongly convex relative to hhh on QQQ (Definitions 1.1 and 1.2). Let (xk)k≥0(x^k)_{k \ge 0}(xk)k≥0 be a run of the dual averaging scheme (Algorithm 2): x0x^0x0 minimises hhh over QQQ with h(x0)=0h(x^0) = 0h(x0)=0, and for k≥0k \ge 0k≥0

xk+1∈arg⁡min⁡x∈Q{h(x)+∑i=0kai+1(f(xi)+⟨∇f(xi),x−xi⟩+μDh(x,xi))},ai+1=1L−μ(LL−μ)i.x^{k+1} \in \arg\min_{x \in Q}\Big\{h(x) + \sum_{i=0}^{k} a_{i+1}\big(f(x^i) + \langle \nabla f(x^i), x - x^i\rangle + \mu D_h(x, x^i)\big)\Big\}, \qquad a_{i+1} = \frac{1}{L-\mu}\Big(\frac{L}{L-\mu}\Big)^i .xk+1∈argx∈Qmin{h(x)+i=0∑kai+1(f(xi)+⟨∇f(xi),x−xi⟩+μDh(x,xi))},ai+1=L−μ1(L−μL)i.

Then for every k≥1k \ge 1k≥1 and every x∈Qx \in Qx∈Q,

min⁡i=1,…,kf(xi)−f(x)≤μh(x)(1+μL−μ)k−1≤L−μk h(x),\min_{i=1,\dots,k} f(x^i) - f(x) \le \frac{\mu h(x)}{\left(1 + \frac{\mu}{L-\mu}\right)^k - 1} \le \frac{L-\mu}{k}\, h(x),i=1,…,kminf(xi)−f(x)≤(1+L−μμ)k−1μh(x)≤kL−μh(x),

where for μ=0\mu = 0μ=0 the middle expression is understood as its limit as μ→0+\mu \to 0^+μ→0+, which is the right-hand side.

With μ>0\mu > 0μ>0 the middle bound decays geometrically, so the dual averaging scheme converges linearly under relative strong convexity; with μ=0\mu = 0μ=0 it attains the O(1/k)O(1/k)O(1/k) rate of the primal gradient scheme, without any strong convexity of hhh.

Formalization Note The statement is split into two parts: (i) for every 0≤μ<L0 \le \mu < L0≤μ<L, some i∈{1,…,k}i \in \{1,\dots,k\}i∈{1,…,k} has f(xi)−f(x)≤L−μkh(x)f(x^i) - f(x) \le \frac{L-\mu}{k} h(x)f(xi)−f(x)≤kL−μh(x); (ii) if μ>0\mu > 0μ>0, some i∈{1,…,k}i \in \{1,\dots,k\}i∈{1,…,k} satisfies the middle bound, and the middle bound is at most the right-hand side. The limit at μ=0\mu = 0μ=0 is not formalised; part (i) is what it asserts. The minimum over iii is written as an existential, which is equivalent. The page's "L>μL > \muL>μ" with μ≥0\mu \ge 0μ≥0 is the pair of hypotheses 0≤μ<L0 \le \mu < L0≤μ<L. Definitions 1.1–1.2 are required only on the (relative) interior of QQQ, as on the page, while the conclusion is for every x∈Qx \in Qx∈Q, as on the page; iterates may lie on the relative boundary. The page's closedness of QQQ is not assumed, which makes the statement stronger.

/-- Theorem 3.2, p. 347: for the dual averaging scheme (Algorithm 2), if `f` is `L`-smooth and
`μ`-strongly convex relative to `h` with `L > μ ≥ 0`, then for all `k ≥ 1` and `u ∈ Q`,
`min_{i=1,…,k} f(x^i) − f(u) ≤ μh(u)/((1 + μ/(L − μ))^k − 1) ≤ ((L − μ)/k) h(u)`.
The case `μ = 0` (middle term defined as a limit) is carried by the outer bound, stated for
every `0 ≤ μ < L`. -/

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
