Let θ(t)=∑p≤tlog⁡p\theta(t)=\sum_{p\le t}\log pθ(t)=∑p≤tlogp be Chebyshev's function, the sum running over primes. For every real t≥3594641t\ge 3594641t≥3594641,

∣θ(t)−t∣≤15 tlog⁡2t.|\theta(t)-t|\le\frac{1}{5}\,\frac{t}{\log^2 t}.∣θ(t)−t∣≤51log2tt.

This is the case k=2k=2k=2, η2=0.2\eta_2=0.2η2=0.2 of Dusart's explicit estimate (stated there with strict inequality). It is the only analytic input of Dusart's bound ∑p≤x1/p−log⁡log⁡x−B≤110log⁡2x+415log⁡3x\sum_{p\le x}1/p-\log\log x-B\le\frac{1}{10\log^2x}+\frac{4}{15\log^3x}∑p≤x1/p−loglogx−B≤10log2x1+15log3x4 for x≥10372x\ge10372x≥10372: that bound is proved on this platform from the present statement (Dusart.reciprocal_primes_of_chebyshev), so a proof of this estimate completes it unconditionally.

Formalization Note θ\thetaθ is Mathlib's Chebyshev.theta.

Status note (2026-10-17) The finite part 3594641≤t≤35849128473594641\le t\le35849128473594641≤t≤3584912847 (Dusart.chebyshev_theta_k2_finite) is proved in Lean 4 in the release Dusart v2.0.0, doi:10.5281/zenodo.23432990; the open input is the part t≥3584912846t\ge3584912846t≥3584912846 (Dusart.chebyshev_theta_k2_large).

Status note (2026-10-19) In the release Dusart v3.0.0, doi:10.5281/zenodo.23463154, the finite part (Dusart.chebyshev_theta_k2_finite) is kernel-checked, and the part t≥3584912846t\ge3584912846t≥3584912846 (Dusart.chebyshev_theta_k2_large) is derived in Lean from the published table row ∣θ(t)−t∣<0.15952 t/log⁡2t|\theta(t)-t|<0.15952\,t/\log^2t∣θ(t)−t∣<0.15952t/log2t for t>5⋅106t>5\cdot10^6t>5⋅106 (Broadbent, Kadiri, Lumley, Ng and Wilk, Math. Comp. 90 (2021), Theorem 1 with k=2k=2k=2, Table 15, row log⁡X0=log⁡(5⋅106)\log X_0=\log(5\cdot10^6)logX0=log(5⋅106)) (Dusart.chebyshev_theta_k2_large_of_bklnw). That row is not formalized, and the finite certificate exceeds this platform's per-job limits, so this entry stays Open here.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
