This describes the centered truncated conjugate around an interior point.

Let EEE be a finite-dimensional real inner-product space, let u:E→Ru:E\to\mathbb Ru:E→R be convex, let M∈RM\in\mathbb RM∈R, and let xc∈Ex_c\in Exc∈E satisfy ∥xc∥<M\|x_c\|<M∥xc∥<M. Define

f(p)=uM∗(p)−⟨p,xc⟩+u(xc).f(p)=u_M^*(p)-\langle p,x_c\rangle+u(x_c).f(p)=uM∗(p)−⟨p,xc⟩+u(xc).

Then:

  1. f(p)≥0f(p)\ge0f(p)≥0 for every ppp.
  2. f(p)=0f(p)=0f(p)=0 exactly when ppp is a subgradient of uuu at xcx_cxc:
f(p)=0  ⟺  ∀y, u(xc)+⟨p,y−xc⟩≤u(y).f(p)=0\iff\forall y,\ u(x_c)+\langle p,y-x_c\rangle\le u(y).f(p)=0⟺∀y, u(xc)+⟨p,y−xc⟩≤u(y).
  1. Every sublevel set {p:f(p)≤R}\{p:f(p)\le R\}{p:f(p)≤R} is compact for every R∈RR\in\mathbb RR∈R.

This provides the compact sublevel structure needed for the contact-set uniqueness argument.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
