Under Assumptions 1 and 2 (unique invariant distribution π>0\pi > 0π>0, square-integrable costs, finite J∗J^*J∗; linearly independent basis functions ϕk\phi_kϕk with E0[ϕk2]<∞E_0[\phi_k^2] < \inftyE0[ϕk2]<∞), let α∈(0,1)\alpha \in (0,1)α∈(0,1), λ∈[0,1]\lambda \in [0,1]λ∈[0,1], and let Π=Φ′(ΦDΦ′)−1ΦD\Pi = \Phi'(\Phi D\Phi')^{-1}\Phi DΠ=Φ′(ΦDΦ′)−1ΦD be the projection of Eq. (1). Then:

  1. ΠT(λ)\Pi T^{(\lambda)}ΠT(λ) maps L2(S,D)L_2(S,D)L2(S,D) into itself;
  2. it is a contraction of ∥⋅∥D\|\cdot\|_D∥⋅∥D: there is c∈[0,1)c \in [0,1)c∈[0,1) with ∥ΠT(λ)J−ΠT(λ)Jˉ∥D≤c∥J−Jˉ∥D\|\Pi T^{(\lambda)}J - \Pi T^{(\lambda)}\bar J\|_D \le c\|J - \bar J\|_D∥ΠT(λ)J−ΠT(λ)Jˉ∥D≤c∥J−Jˉ∥D for all J,Jˉ∈L2(S,D)J,\bar J \in L_2(S,D)J,Jˉ∈L2(S,D);
  3. it has a unique fixed point in L2(S,D)L_2(S,D)L2(S,D), of the form Φ′r∗\Phi'r^*Φ′r∗ for a unique r∗∈RKr^* \in \mathbb R^Kr∗∈RK;
  4. this r∗r^*r∗ satisfies
∥Φ′r∗−J∗∥D≤∥ΠJ∗−J∗∥D1−α(1−λ)/(1−αλ).\|\Phi' r^* - J^*\|_D \le \frac{\|\Pi J^* - J^*\|_D}{1 - \alpha(1-\lambda)/(1-\alpha\lambda)}.∥Φ′r∗−J∗∥D≤1−α(1−λ)/(1−αλ)∥ΠJ∗−J∗∥D.

The fixed point Φ′r∗\Phi'r^*Φ′r∗ is the limit that TD(λ\lambdaλ) is shown to reach, and the bound compares its error with the best approximation error ∥ΠJ∗−J∗∥D\|\Pi J^* - J^*\|_D∥ΠJ∗−J∗∥D available in the span of the basis functions.

Formalization Note. Fixed points are equalities of functions on SSS; since π(i)>0\pi(i) > 0π(i)>0 for all iii this is the same as equality in L2(S,D)L_2(S,D)L2(S,D). "Unique choice of r∗r^*r∗" is stated as: every rrr with ΠT(λ)(Φ′r)=Φ′r\Pi T^{(\lambda)}(\Phi'r) = \Phi'rΠT(λ)(Φ′r)=Φ′r equals r∗r^*r∗.

/-- **Lemma 5** (Tsitsiklis & Van Roy, LIDS-P-2322 (1996), p. 14). Under Assumptions 1 and 2, for
`λ ∈ [0, 1]`, `ΠT^(λ)(·)` maps `L₂(S, D)` into itself and is a contraction of `‖·‖_D`; it has a
unique fixed point in `L₂(S, D)`, which is of the form `Φ′r*` for a unique choice of `r*`; and
`‖Φ′r* − J*‖_D ≤ ‖ΠJ* − J*‖_D / (1 − α(1 − λ)/(1 − αλ))`. -/

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
