Let EEE, GGG be finite-dimensional real normed spaces, F:E→GF : E \to GF:E→G locally Lipschitz, and x∈Ex \in Ex∈E.

  1. If FFF is semismooth at xxx, then as h→0h \to 0h→0
F(x+h)−F(x)−F′(x;h)=o(∥h∥).(2.17)F(x+h) - F(x) - F'(x;h) = o(\|h\|). \tag{2.17}F(x+h)−F(x)−F′(x;h)=o(∥h∥).(2.17)
  1. If 0<p≤10 < p \le 10<p≤1 and FFF is ppp-order semismooth at xxx, then as h→0h \to 0h→0
F(x+h)−F(x)−F′(x;h)=O(∥h∥1+p).F(x+h) - F(x) - F'(x;h) = O(\|h\|^{1+p}).F(x+h)−F(x)−F′(x;h)=O(∥h∥1+p).

Together with (2.8), the expansion (2.17) is what lets the Newton step be compared with the directional derivative at the root in the proof of Theorem 3.2; the second clause gives the order 1+p1+p1+p.

Formalization Note The o(∥h∥)o(\|h\|)o(∥h∥) is pinned as: for every ε>0\varepsilon > 0ε>0 there is δ>0\delta > 0δ>0 with ∥F(x+h)−F(x)−F′(x;h)∥≤ε∥h∥\|F(x+h)-F(x)-F'(x;h)\| \le \varepsilon\|h\|∥F(x+h)−F(x)−F′(x;h)∥≤ε∥h∥ whenever ∥h∥<δ\|h\| < \delta∥h∥<δ. The O(∥h∥1+p)O(\|h\|^{1+p})O(∥h∥1+p) is pinned as: there are CCC and δ>0\delta > 0δ>0 with the same norm ≤C∥h∥1+p\le C\|h\|^{1+p}≤C∥h∥1+p whenever ∥h∥<δ\|h\| < \delta∥h∥<δ. The Remark is unnumbered in the paper and cited by its equation number.

Setting. EEE and GGG are finite-dimensional real normed spaces. F:E→GF : E \to GF:E→G is locally Lipschitz on all of EEE, and x∈Ex \in Ex∈E. JF(y)\mathcal{J}_F(y)JF(y) is the set of continuous linear maps E→GE \to GE→G given by the external definition clarkeJac, which is not shown here.

F′(x;h)F'(x;h)F′(x;h) is the value assigned to the one-sided limit lim⁡t↓0t−1(F(x+th)−F(x))\lim_{t \downarrow 0} t^{-1}(F(x+th) - F(x))limt↓0t−1(F(x+th)−F(x)). This value is the true limit when the limit exists, and an unspecified fixed element of GGG otherwise. The statement contains no separate hypothesis that the limit exists.

The semismoothness notions used are:

  • Semismooth at xxx. FFF is KKK-Lipschitz near xxx for some K≥0K \ge 0K≥0, and for every hhh there is LhL_hLh with ∥Vh′−Lh∥<ε\|V h' - L_h\| < \varepsilon∥Vh′−Lh∥<ε whenever 0<t<δ0 < t < \delta0<t<δ, ∥h′−h∥<δ\|h' - h\| < \delta∥h′−h∥<δ and V∈JF(x+th′)V \in \mathcal{J}_F(x + t h')V∈JF(x+th′) (with δ\deltaδ depending on ε\varepsilonε).
  • ppp-order semismooth at xxx. FFF is semismooth at xxx, and there are real CCC and δ>0\delta > 0δ>0 with ∥Vh−d∥≤C∥h∥1+p\|Vh - d\| \le C\|h\|^{1+p}∥Vh−d∥≤C∥h∥1+p for all ∥h∥<δ\|h\| < \delta∥h∥<δ, all V∈JF(x+h)V \in \mathcal{J}_F(x+h)V∈JF(x+h), and every ddd that is the one-sided directional derivative of FFF at xxx in direction hhh.

Conclusion. Both of the following hold.

  1. Semismooth case. If FFF is semismooth at xxx, then for every ε>0\varepsilon > 0ε>0 there is a δ>0\delta > 0δ>0 such that for all hhh with ∥h∥<δ\|h\| < \delta∥h∥<δ,
∥F(x+h)−F(x)−F′(x;h)∥≤ε∥h∥.\|F(x+h) - F(x) - F'(x;h)\| \le \varepsilon \|h\| .∥F(x+h)−F(x)−F′(x;h)∥≤ε∥h∥.
  1. ppp-order case. For every real ppp with 0<p≤10 < p \le 10<p≤1: if FFF is ppp-order semismooth at xxx, then there are real numbers CCC and δ>0\delta > 0δ>0 such that for all hhh with ∥h∥<δ\|h\| < \delta∥h∥<δ,
∥F(x+h)−F(x)−F′(x;h)∥≤C∥h∥1+p.\|F(x+h) - F(x) - F'(x;h)\| \le C \|h\|^{1+p} .∥F(x+h)−F(x)−F′(x;h)∥≤C∥h∥1+p.

Degenerate cases.

  • h=0h = 0h=0. F′(x;0)=0F'(x;0) = 0F′(x;0)=0, so both bounds read 0≤00 \le 00≤0.
  • Junk values. For any direction in which the one-sided limit might fail to exist, the bounds are asserted for the unspecified junk value of F′(x;h)F'(x;h)F′(x;h).
  • Zero spaces. If EEE or GGG is the zero space, both conclusions hold trivially.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
