Theorem. Let k≥3k\ge3k≥3, ∣U∣=2k|U|=2^k∣U∣=2k, and let W⊆UW\subseteq UW⊆U be any set with ∣W∣=k−2|W|=k-2∣W∣=k−2. Then there are two maps g0,g1:P(U)→Ug_0,g_1:\mathcal P(U)\to Ug0,g1:P(U)→U such that for every kkk-set Y⊇WY\supseteq WY⊇W,

{g0(A):A⊆Y}∪{g1(A):A⊆Y}=U.\{g_0(A):A\subseteq Y\}\cup\{g_1(A):A\subseteq Y\}=U.{g0(A):A⊆Y}∪{g1(A):A⊆Y}=U.

Explicitly, gi(A)=θ(i,[A⊈W],A∩W)g_i(A)=\theta(i,[A\not\subseteq W],A\cap W)gi(A)=θ(i,[A⊆W],A∩W) for a bijection θ:{0,1}2×P(W)→U\theta:\{0,1\}^2\times\mathcal P(W)\to Uθ:{0,1}2×P(W)→U. Context: Erdős Problem 624 asks whether H(n)−log⁡2n→∞H(n)-\log_2 n\to\inftyH(n)−log2n→∞, where H(n)H(n)H(n) is the least mmm such that some f:P(X)→Xf:\mathcal P(X)\to Xf:P(X)→X (∣X∣=n|X|=n∣X∣=n) satisfies f[P(Y)]=Xf[\mathcal P(Y)]=Xf[P(Y)]=X for all ∣Y∣≥m|Y|\ge m∣Y∣≥m. By an earlier track-amplification result, it would suffice to show that for each fixed number rrr of maps gi:P(U)→Ug_i:\mathcal P(U)\to Ugi:P(U)→U, ∣U∣=2k|U|=2^k∣U∣=2k, kkk large, some kkk-set YYY and some u∈Uu\in Uu∈U are missed by all gig_igi on P(Y)\mathcal P(Y)P(Y) (a common hole). This shows that the one-map palette argument over a fixed core WWW (which proves the robust Alon bound) cannot give a two-map common hole: any successful argument must compare different cores.

Formalization Note. U=Fin (2k)U=\mathrm{Fin}\,(2^k)U=Fin(2k).

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
