Let f∈RMf \in \mathbb R^Mf∈RM, let g:RPβ†’RMg : \mathbb R^P \to \mathbb R^Mg:RPβ†’RM be measurable, let KβŠ†RM\mathcal K \subseteq \mathbb R^MKβŠ†RM be a proper cone, and let CiβŠ†RP\mathcal C_i \subseteq \mathbb R^PCiβ€‹βŠ†RP, i∈Ii \in \mathcal Ii∈I, be measurable sets with bounds pβ€Ύi,pβ€Ύi∈R\underline p_i, \overline p_i \in \mathbb Rpi,piβ€‹βˆˆR. Consider the ambiguity set

Pβ€²={Q∈P0(RP):Β EQ[g(z~)]β‰ΌKf,Β Β Q[z~∈Ci]∈[pβ€Ύi,pβ€Ύi]Β Β βˆ€i∈I}\mathcal P' = \Big\{ \mathbb Q \in \mathcal P_0(\mathbb R^P) : \ \mathbb E_{\mathbb Q}[g(\tilde z)] \preccurlyeq_{\mathcal K} f,\ \ \mathbb Q[\tilde z \in \mathcal C_i] \in [\underline p_i, \overline p_i]\ \ \forall i \in \mathcal I \Big\}Pβ€²={Q∈P0(RP):Β EQ[g(z~)]β‰ΌKf,Β Β Q[z~∈Ci]∈[pi,pi]Β Β βˆ€i∈I}

and the lifted ambiguity set, involving an auxiliary random vector u~∈RM\tilde u \in \mathbb R^Mu~∈RM,

P={P∈P0(RPΓ—RM):Β EP[u~]=f,Β Β P[g(z~)β‰ΌKu~]=1,Β Β P[z~∈Ci]∈[pβ€Ύi,pβ€Ύi]Β Β βˆ€i∈I}.\mathcal P = \Big\{ \mathbb P \in \mathcal P_0(\mathbb R^P \times \mathbb R^M) : \ \mathbb E_{\mathbb P}[\tilde u] = f,\ \ \mathbb P[g(\tilde z) \preccurlyeq_{\mathcal K} \tilde u] = 1,\ \ \mathbb P[\tilde z \in \mathcal C_i] \in [\underline p_i, \overline p_i]\ \ \forall i \in \mathcal I \Big\}.P={P∈P0(RPΓ—RM):Β EP[u~]=f,Β Β P[g(z~)β‰ΌKu~]=1,Β Β P[z~∈Ci]∈[pi,pi]Β Β βˆ€i∈I}.

Then

Pβ€²=Ξ z~P.\mathcal P' = \Pi_{\tilde z}\mathcal P .Pβ€²=Ξ z~P.

The theorem says that a conic bound on a (possibly nonlinear) moment E[g(z~)]\mathbb E[g(\tilde z)]E[g(z~)] can be traded for a linear expectation constraint on an auxiliary vector plus an almost-sure conic constraint, without changing the set of distributions of z~\tilde zz~. This is how the paper fits higher-order moment information into its standardized ambiguity set.

Formalization Note Only assertion (i) is formalized; assertion (ii), that P\mathcal PP "can be reformulated as an instance of the standardized ambiguity set (4)", rests on the informal notion of a conic representable epigraph. The page's hypothesis that ggg has a conic representable K\mathcal KK-epigraph is not used by (i) and is dropped (a strengthening); ggg is only assumed measurable, which E[g(z~)]\mathbb E[g(\tilde z)]E[g(z~)] presupposes. Every expectation is read as existing and finite: Pβ€²\mathcal P'Pβ€² requires g(z~)g(\tilde z)g(z~) integrable, and P\mathcal PP requires u~\tilde uu~ and g(z~)g(\tilde z)g(z~) integrable. The last clause is an addition to the page and is necessary: with M=1M = 1M=1, K=R+\mathcal K = \mathbb R_+K=R+, f=0f = 0f=0, g(z)=βˆ’z2g(z) = -z^2g(z)=βˆ’z2, z~\tilde zz~ standard Cauchy and u~≑0\tilde u \equiv 0u~≑0, the joint law satisfies the page's constraints but E[g(z~)]\mathbb E[g(\tilde z)]E[g(z~)] does not exist. The confidence sets are arbitrary measurable subsets of RP\mathbb R^PRP (the paper's conic sets (5) are closed, hence a special case). The index set I\mathcal II is Fin nI.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
