Let PPP be the projector onto the code space of a quantum code on a finite-dimensional system. A unitary UUU is logical if (I−P)UP=0(I-P)UP = 0(I−P)UP=0 (Eq. (1)). Then the set

L={ U unitary:(I−P) U P=0 }\mathcal L = \{\, U \text{ unitary} : (I-P)\,U\,P = 0 \,\}L={U unitary:(I−P)UP=0}

is a subgroup of the unitary group: it contains the identity and is closed under products and inverses.

This is the first structural fact behind the Eastin–Knill theorem: composing logical gates produces nothing beyond the group they already form.

Formalization Note The statement asserts the existence of a subgroup of Matrix.unitaryGroup whose carrier is exactly L\mathcal LL.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
