Let m=(x,p)m=(x,p)m=(x,p) be a truthful additive mechanism for task scheduling, and let ttt be the type vector with tji′=1t^{i'}_j = 1tji′=1 for every agent i′i'i′ and task jjj. Fix an agent iii, let x=xi(t)x = x^i(t)x=xi(t) and let xˉ\bar xxˉ be its complement. For 0<ϵ<10<\epsilon<10<ϵ<1 let

t^=t(x→i1−ϵ, xˉ→iϵ),\hat t = t\bigl(x \xrightarrow{i} 1-\epsilon,\ \bar x \xrightarrow{i} \epsilon\bigr),t^=t(xi1−ϵ, xˉiϵ),

the type vector obtained from ttt by setting t^ji=1−ϵ\hat t^i_j = 1-\epsilont^ji=1−ϵ for j∈xj\in xj∈x and t^ji=ϵ\hat t^i_j = \epsilont^ji=ϵ for j∉xj\notin xj∈/x, all other agents unchanged. Assume that the empty set is attainable for agent iii against t−it^{-i}t−i (some positive declaration of agent iii makes the mechanism give it no task). Then

xi(t^)⊇xi(t).x^i(\hat t) \supseteq x^i(t).xi(t^)⊇xi(t).

In the proof of Theorem 4.10 this is applied to an agent holding at least nnn tasks at ttt, and it forces that agent to keep them after its times drop.

Formalization Note The paper states the claim for agent 111 after a relabelling; here it is stated for an arbitrary agent iii. The hypothesis that ∅\emptyset∅ is attainable is added: without it the claim as printed is false (a mechanism that always gives agent iii exactly its ∣x∣|x|∣x∣ cheapest tasks and pays nothing is truthful and additive, and at t^\hat tt^ with ϵ<1/2\epsilon<1/2ϵ<1/2 and k>∣x∣k>|x|k>∣x∣ it trades a task of xxx for a cheaper task of xˉ\bar xxˉ). The paper's proof uses it implicitly through "the price offered to agent 1 for xxx is strictly greater than t^1(x)\hat t^1(x)t^1(x)". Under the hypothesis of Theorem 4.10 that the mechanism is a ccc-approximation, ∅\emptyset∅ is attainable for every agent when n≥2n\ge 2n≥2.
