Identify the Euclidean plane with C\mathbb CC. For S⊆CS\subseteq\mathbb CS⊆C let Sym+(S)\mathrm{Sym}^+(S)Sym+(S) be the group of orientation-preserving Euclidean isometries T(z)=az+bT(z)=az+bT(z)=az+b (a,b∈Ca,b\in\mathbb Ca,b∈C, ∣a∣=1|a|=1∣a∣=1) with T(S)=ST(S)=ST(S)=S. Let C4={z∈C:Re⁡(z4)=1}C_4=\{z\in\mathbb C:\operatorname{Re}(z^4)=1\}C4={z∈C:Re(z4)=1} and, for α∈C\alpha\in\mathbb Cα∈C, let C2,α={z∈C:Re⁡(z2(∣z∣2+α))=0}C_{2,\alpha}=\{z\in\mathbb C:\operatorname{Re}\bigl(z^2(|z|^2+\alpha)\bigr)=0\}C2,α={z∈C:Re(z2(∣z∣2+α))=0}, the set of equation (1) of the note with m=2m=2m=2 (where the note takes ∣α∣=1|\alpha|=1∣α∣=1 and α∉R\alpha\notin\mathbb Rα∈/R). For a,b∈Ca,b\in\mathbb Ca,b∈C and S⊆CS\subseteq\mathbb CS⊆C write aS+b={az+b:z∈S}aS+b=\{az+b:z\in S\}aS+b={az+b:z∈S} and aS‾+b={azˉ+b:z∈S}a\overline S+b=\{a\bar z+b:z\in S\}aS+b={azˉ+b:z∈S}.

Let K4=Frac⁡(C[X,Y]/(X4+Y4−2))K_4=\operatorname{Frac}\bigl(\mathbb C[X,Y]/(X^4+Y^4-2)\bigr)K4=Frac(C[X,Y]/(X4+Y4−2)), the function field of the complexification X4+Y4=2X^4+Y^4=2X4+Y4=2 of C4C_4C4 in the coordinates X=zX=zX=z, Y=zˉY=\bar zY=zˉ. For α∈C\alpha\in\mathbb Cα∈C with α≠αˉ\alpha\ne\bar\alphaα=αˉ let Pα=X2(α+XY)+Y2(αˉ+XY)P_\alpha=X^2(\alpha+XY)+Y^2(\bar\alpha+XY)Pα=X2(α+XY)+Y2(αˉ+XY), the polynomial of equation (6) of the note with m=2m=2m=2, and K2,α=Frac⁡(C[X,Y]/(Pα))K_{2,\alpha}=\operatorname{Frac}\bigl(\mathbb C[X,Y]/(P_\alpha)\bigr)K2,α=Frac(C[X,Y]/(Pα)). For a field L⊇CL\supseteq\mathbb CL⊇C, a place of LLL is a valuation ring O\mathcal OO of LLL with C⊆O≠L\mathbb C\subseteq\mathcal O\ne LC⊆O=L. A Kähler differential ω∈ΩL/C\omega\in\Omega_{L/\mathbb C}ω∈ΩL/C is regular at O\mathcal OO if it is a C\mathbb CC-linear combination of differentials u dvu\,dvudv with u,v∈Ou,v\in\mathcal Ou,v∈O, and holomorphic if it is regular at every place. The genus g(L)g(L)g(L) is the dimension over C\mathbb CC of the space of holomorphic differentials of LLL.

Then:

  1. Sym+(C4)\mathrm{Sym}^+(C_4)Sym+(C4) has exactly four elements;
  2. g(K4)=3g(K_4)=3g(K4)=3;
  3. g(K2,α)=2g(K_{2,\alpha})=2g(K2,α)=2 for every α∈C\alpha\in\mathbb Cα∈C with α≠αˉ\alpha\ne\bar\alphaα=αˉ;
  4. there are no a,b,α∈Ca,b,\alpha\in\mathbb Ca,b,α∈C with a≠0a\ne0a=0, α≠αˉ\alpha\ne\bar\alphaα=αˉ and aC4+b=C2,αaC_4+b=C_{2,\alpha}aC4+b=C2,α or aC4‾+b=C2,αa\overline{C_4}+b=C_{2,\alpha}aC4+b=C2,α.

In short,

∣Sym+(C4)∣=4,g(K4)=3,g(K2,α)=2(α∉R),|\mathrm{Sym}^+(C_4)|=4,\qquad g(K_4)=3,\qquad g(K_{2,\alpha})=2\quad(\alpha\notin\mathbb R),∣Sym+(C4)∣=4,g(K4)=3,g(K2,α)=2(α∈/R),

and no direct or orientation-reversing similarity carries C4C_4C4 onto a set C2,αC_{2,\alpha}C2,α with α∉R\alpha\notin\mathbb Rα∈/R.

This is the degree-four example of Remark 5 of the note as printed: Re⁡(z4)=1\operatorname{Re}(z^4)=1Re(z4)=1 also attains the rotation bound and is not in the m=2m=2m=2 family, since its normalization has genus three rather than two. Normalizations are read as function fields, and the family parameter is only required to be nonreal.

Formalization Note: Sym+(S)\mathrm{Sym}^+(S)Sym+(S) is a subgroup of the isometry group ℂ ≃ᵢ ℂ, and its size is Nat.card (000 for an infinite group). In part 3 the hypothesis α≠αˉ\alpha\ne\bar\alphaα=αˉ is a Fact instance argument, and the instance 0<20<20<2 needed for m=2m=2m=2 is supplied locally.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
