Let hhh and PPP satisfy the standing assumptions (hhh is C2C^2C2 with bounded Hessian; PPP is proper, closed, with well-defined proximal mappings). Let q:Rn→Rq : \mathbb{R}^n \to \mathbb{R}q:Rn→R be twice continuously differentiable and convex, ℓ>0\ell > 0ℓ>0, and suppose −ℓI⪯∇2h(x)+∇2q(x)⪯ℓI-\ell I \preceq \nabla^2 h(x) + \nabla^2 q(x) \preceq \ell I−ℓI⪯∇2h(x)+∇2q(x)⪯ℓI for all xxx. Let β>0\beta > 0β>0 and let (xt)(x^t)(xt) be generated by the proximal gradient update (43). Then for every t≥0t \ge 0t≥0,

h(xt+1)+P(xt+1)≤h(xt)+P(xt)+(ℓ2−12β)∥xt+1−xt∥2.h(x^{t+1}) + P(x^{t+1}) \le h(x^t) + P(x^t) + \Bigl(\frac{\ell}{2} - \frac{1}{2\beta}\Bigr)\|x^{t+1} - x^t\|^2 .h(xt+1)+P(xt+1)≤h(xt)+P(xt)+(2ℓ−2β1)∥xt+1−xt∥2.

When β<1/ℓ\beta < 1/\ellβ<1/ℓ the coefficient is negative, so the objective decreases along the iterates by a multiple of the squared step length.

Formalization Note Both sides are in EReal; when P(xt)=+∞P(x^t) = +\inftyP(xt)=+∞ the right side is +∞+\infty+∞. Only β>0\beta > 0β>0 is assumed, as the inequality itself does not need β<1/ℓ\beta < 1/\ellβ<1/ℓ.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
