Let AAA be a self-adjoint operator in a complex Hilbert space H\mathfrak HH and suppose KKK is relatively compact with respect to AAA. Then the AAA-bound of KKK is zero:

inf⁡{a≥0∣∃b≥0 ∀ψ∈D(A): ∥Kψ∥≤a∥Aψ∥+b∥ψ∥}=0.\inf\{ a \ge 0 \mid \exists b \ge 0\ \forall \psi \in \mathfrak D(A):\ \|K\psi\| \le a\|A\psi\| + b\|\psi\| \} = 0 .inf{a≥0∣∃b≥0 ∀ψ∈D(A): ∥Kψ∥≤a∥Aψ∥+b∥ψ∥}=0.

Relatively compact perturbations are therefore infinitesimally small, and the Kato–Rellich theorem applies to them with any bound.

Formalization Note. The AAA-bound is valued in [0,∞][0,\infty][0,∞] and equals ∞\infty∞ when KKK is not AAA bounded, so the conclusion includes that KKK is AAA bounded. Relative compactness is (5.12): KRA(z)K R_A(z)KRA(z) is compact for one z∈ρ(A)z \in \rho(A)z∈ρ(A), with D(A)⊆D(K)\mathfrak D(A) \subseteq \mathfrak D(K)D(A)⊆D(K).

/-- Teschl, Lemma 6.22, p. 148. Let `A` be self-adjoint and suppose `K` is relatively compact with
respect to `A`. Then the `A`-bound of `K` is zero. (The `A`-bound is valued in `[0, ∞]` and is `∞`
for an operator that is not `A` bounded, so the conclusion includes that `K` is `A` bounded.) -/

Setting. HHH is a complex Hilbert space. AAA and KKK are partially defined C\mathbb{C}C-linear operators on HHH.

Hypotheses.

  1. A∗=AA^* = AA∗=A, with the library's adjoint of a partially defined operator. That adjoint is the usual one for dense D(A)\mathcal{D}(A)D(A). Otherwise it is the zero operator on all of HHH, so the hypothesis then forces A=0A = 0A=0 on all of HHH.
  2. KKK is relatively compact with respect to AAA, in the sense of the imported predicate TeschlQM.Shared.IsRelativelyCompact K A. Its definition is not shown here.

No symmetry or domain condition is imposed on KKK other than what that predicate contains.

Conclusion. The AAA-bound of KKK equals 000:

relativeBound(A,K)=0,\mathrm{relativeBound}(A, K) = 0,relativeBound(A,K)=0,

where relativeBound(A,K)\mathrm{relativeBound}(A, K)relativeBound(A,K) is the imported definition TeschlQM.Shared.relativeBound A K. Its definition, and the set it takes values in, are not shown here.

Degenerate cases. Whether the conclusion is informative when KKK is not AAA-bounded, or when a defining set is empty or unbounded, depends entirely on how the imported relativeBound treats those cases, and that is not visible in this text. If H={0}H = \{0\}H={0}, the statement asserts the value 000 for whatever the imported definition returns there.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
