Let Pn\mathcal P_nPn be the nnn-qubit Pauli group and let g1,…,ga∈Png_1,\dots,g_a\in\mathcal P_ng1,…,ga∈Pn generate a stabilizer S=⟨g1,…,ga⟩S=\langle g_1,\dots,g_a\rangleS=⟨g1,…,ga⟩, that is, an Abelian subgroup of Pn\mathcal P_nPn with −I∉S-I\notin S−I∈/S, and suppose the generators are independent, i.e. ∣S∣=2a|S|=2^a∣S∣=2a. The error syndrome of a Pauli operator EEE is the vector in F2a\mathbb F_2^aF2a whose iii-th bit is 000 if gig_igi commutes with EEE and 111 if it anticommutes.

Then for every v∈F2av\in\mathbb F_2^av∈F2a there is E∈PnE\in\mathcal P_nE∈Pn with syndrome vvv:

giE=Egi  if vi=0,giE=−Egi  if vi=1(i=1,…,a).g_iE=Eg_i\ \text{ if } v_i=0,\qquad g_iE=-Eg_i\ \text{ if } v_i=1\qquad(i=1,\dots,a).giE=Egi  if vi=0,giE=−Egi  if vi=1(i=1,…,a).

This lemma is the step in the proof of the dimension count of stabilizer codes (Theorem 5) that shows all 2a2^a2a syndrome subspaces are nonempty.

Formalization Note The syndrome is relative to the generator list, as in the source's proof; the independence of the generators (used in the proof as linear independence of their binary vectors) is the hypothesis ∣S∣=2a|S|=2^a∣S∣=2a. The anticommutation clause is stated explicitly.

/-- Gottesman intro p.12–13, Lemma 1: given a stabilizer `S` (an Abelian subgroup of `P_n`
with `−1 ∉ S`) with independent generators `g_1, …, g_a` (so `|S| = 2^a`), every error syndrome
`v ∈ F_2^a` is the syndrome of some Pauli operator `E`: `E` commutes with `g_i` when `v_i = 0`
and anticommutes with `g_i` when `v_i = 1`. -/

What the Lean code literally says, in plain math · claude-opus-5-5

Setting. Fix natural numbers nnn and aaa. Let g1,…,gag_1,\dots,g_ag1,…,ga be unitary 2n×2n2^n\times 2^n2n×2n complex matrices, indexed by 0,…,a−10,\dots,a-10,…,a−1 in the code, with rows and columns indexed by {0,1}n\{0,1\}^n{0,1}n. Let G=⟨g1,…,ga⟩G = \langle g_1,\dots,g_a\rangleG=⟨g1,…,ga⟩ be the subgroup of the unitary group they generate.

Pauli group. Pn\mathcal P_nPn is the subgroup of the unitary group generated by all matrices of the form

ic P1⊗⋯⊗Pn,c∈Z/4, Pq∈{I,X,Y,Z}.i^{c}\,P_1\otimes\cdots\otimes P_n,\qquad c\in\mathbb Z/4,\ P_q\in\{I,X,Y,Z\}.icP1⊗⋯⊗Pn,c∈Z/4, Pq∈{I,X,Y,Z}.

Hypotheses.

  1. GGG is a stabilizer group.
    • G≤PnG \le \mathcal P_nG≤Pn.
    • GGG is abelian.
    • No element of GGG equals −I-I−I.
  2. Size of GGG. GGG has exactly 2a2^a2a elements. This forces GGG to be finite.

Conclusion. For every binary vector v∈(Z/2)av \in (\mathbb Z/2)^av∈(Z/2)a there exists E∈PnE \in \mathcal P_nE∈Pn such that, for each iii:

vi=0  ⟹  giE=Egi,vi=1  ⟹  giE=− Egi,v_i = 0 \;\Longrightarrow\; g_i E = E g_i, \qquad v_i = 1 \;\Longrightarrow\; g_i E = -\,E g_i,vi=0⟹giE=Egi,vi=1⟹giE=−Egi,

as matrix equalities.

Degenerate case. When a=0a = 0a=0 there are no generators. Then GGG is trivial, the size hypothesis reads 1=201 = 2^01=20, and the conclusion holds for any E∈PnE \in \mathcal P_nE∈Pn, e.g. the identity.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
