Define PiP_iPi to be the probability that the ant stays on the same side after iii more moves if the previous move stayed on the same side (top or bottom). Define QiQ_iQi to be the probability that the ant stays on the same side after iii more moves if the previous move switched between top and bottom. After switching sides, the next move cannot, so Qi=Pi−1Q_i = P_{i-1}Qi=Pi−1 . We also have the recursion Pi+1=12Pi+12(1−Qi)=12(Pi−Pi−1+1)P_{i+1} = \frac 12 P_i + \frac 12 (1-Q_i) = \frac 12 (P_i - P_{i-1} + 1)Pi+1=21Pi+21(1−Qi)=21(Pi−Pi−1+1) since with one-half probability it stays on the same side and with one-half probability, it switches sides and the probability that we return to the original is 1−Qi1-Q_i1−Qi . \n\n We wish to compute 23(1−P7)+13Q7\frac 23(1-P_7) + \frac 13 Q_732(1−P7)+31Q7 . It is easy to see that P1=12P_1 = \frac 12P1=21 and P2=14P_2 = \frac 14P2=41 . \n\n Now, using the recursion Pi+1=12Pi+12(1−Pi−1)=12(Pi−Pi−1+1)P_{i+1} = \frac 12 P_i + \frac 12 (1-P_{i-1}) = \frac 12 (P_i - P_{i-1} + 1)Pi+1=21Pi+21(1−Pi−1)=21(Pi−Pi−1+1) we compute \n\n \begin{tabular}{c | c} n & P_n \ 1 & \frac 12 \ 2 & \frac 14 \ 3 & \frac 38 \ 4 & \frac{9}{16} \ 5 & \frac{19}{32} \ 6 & \frac{33}{64} \ 7 & \frac{59}{128} \ \end{tabular} \n\n at which point it is easy to compute 23(1−P7)+13Q7=1732→049.\frac 23(1-P_7) + \frac 13 Q_7 = \frac{17}{32}\rightarrow \boxed{049}.32(1−P7)+31Q7=3217→049.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
