There is an absolute constant c0>0c_0>0c0>0 with the following property. Let XXX be any data universe, CCC a class of predicates φ:X→{0,1}\varphi:X\to\{0,1\}φ:X→{0,1} of finite VC-dimension d≥1d\ge1d≥1, and 0<α≤120<\alpha\le\tfrac120<α≤21. For every (nonempty) database D∈X∗D\in X^*D∈X∗ there is a database D′∈X∗D'\in X^*D′∈X∗ with

∣D′∣ ≤ c0 d log⁡(1/α)α2|D'|\ \le\ c_0\,\frac{d\,\log(1/\alpha)}{\alpha^2}∣D′∣ ≤ c0α2dlog(1/α)

such that ∣Qφ(D)−Qφ(D′)∣≤α|Q_\varphi(D)-Q_\varphi(D')|\le\alpha∣Qφ(D)−Qφ(D′)∣≤α for every φ∈C\varphi\in Cφ∈C.

This is the uniform-convergence (ε-approximation) property of classes of finite VC-dimension, which the paper cites from Anthony–Bartlett and Vapnik; it replaces Lemma 3.7 for infinite classes.

Formalization Note The paper writes ∣D′∣=O(VCDIM(C)log⁡(1/α)/α2)|D'|=O(\mathrm{VCDIM}(C)\log(1/\alpha)/\alpha^2)∣D′∣=O(VCDIM(C)log(1/α)/α2); the O(⋅)O(\cdot)O(⋅) is an absolute constant c0c_0c0 quantified before the universe, the class and α\alphaα, and the size is "at most". The VC-dimension is the platform's HighDimProb.Chaining.vcDim. The cases d=0d=0d=0 (the bound is 000, while D′D'D′ is nonempty) and α>12\alpha>\tfrac12α>21 (where log⁡(1/α)\log(1/\alpha)log(1/α) may be ≤0\le0≤0) are excluded. Logarithms are natural.

/-- Lemma 3.8 ([AB99, Vap98], p. 10): there is an absolute constant `c₀ > 0` such that for every

`c₀ d log(1/α)/α²` has `|Q_φ(D) − Q_φ(D′)| ≤ α` for every `φ ∈ C`. -/

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
