Consider the network revenue management problem with mmm resources of capacities cqc_qcq, a horizon of TTT periods, revenues rjr_jrj and resource consumptions aq,ja_{q,j}aq,j, where customers choose under a Markov chain choice model with λj>0\lambda_j>0λj>0, ρj,i≥0\rho_{j,i}\ge0ρj,i≥0 and ∑i∈Nρj,i<1\sum_{i\in N}\rho_{j,i}<1∑i∈Nρj,i<1. Let (x^,z^)(\hat x,\hat z)(x^,z^) be an optimal solution of the (Reduced) linear program. Then:

  1. there exist subsets S1,…,SK⊆NS^1,\dots,S^K\subseteq NS1,…,SK⊆N and positive scalars γ1,…,γK\gamma^1,\dots,\gamma^Kγ1,…,γK summing to one such that
x^=∑k=1KγkPSkandz^=∑k=1KγkRSk;\hat x = \sum_{k=1}^K\gamma^k P_{S^k}\qquad\text{and}\qquad \hat z = \sum_{k=1}^K\gamma^k R_{S^k};x^=k=1∑KγkPSkandz^=k=1∑KγkRSk;
  1. for any such subsets and scalars, the solution u^\hat uu^ with u^Sk=γk\hat u_{S^k}=\gamma^ku^Sk=γk for k=1,…,Kk=1,\dots,Kk=1,…,K and u^S=0\hat u_S = 0u^S=0 for S∉{S1,…,SK}S\notin\{S^1,\dots,S^K\}S∈/{S1,…,SK} is optimal for the (Choice Based) linear program, and its objective value equals the objective value of (x^,z^)(\hat x,\hat z)(x^,z^) in (Reduced); that is, the optimal objective values of the (Reduced) and (Choice Based) linear programs are the same.

The (Choice Based) program has 2n2^n2n variables while (Reduced) has 2n2n2n variables and m+nm+nm+n constraints; the theorem says that solving the small program and decomposing its solution into offer sets solves the large one.

Formalization Note The optimal solution of (Reduced) is a hypothesis "feasible and at least as good as every feasible point". The vector u^\hat uu^ is uHat S γ, with u^S=∑k: Sk=Sγk\hat u_S = \sum_{k:\,S^k=S}\gamma^ku^S=∑k:Sk=Sγk: this is the paper's definition when the SkS^kSk are distinct, and the only consistent reading when they are not. Part 2 is stated for every decomposition from part 1 (the paper's "In this case").
